In 1961 Waardenburg and his colleagues cited a report by Bartholin in 1673. I found two Bartholins: Thomas (1616 - 1680) and Caspar (1655 - 1738), both Danish anatomists. I don't know which of the two made the report, but Caspar would only have been 18 at the time, so Thomas seems more logical. They are better known for discovering other structures.

Unfortunately, you need have an understanding of how the eye forms in fetal life. Perhaps you could find a textbook of embryology at your local library. Colobomas (or colobomata) may involve the iris alone, or other eye structures including the retina. A simple coloboma of the iris may have little effect on vision, whereas one that involves the retina may result in defects of one's vision.

Colobomas are often associated with other eye abnormalities.
