The God of the Old Testament was always popping up in the world in the form of burning bushes and the like, and suspending His own laws of the universe to perform miracles.

But God is less flamboyant these days. Miracles are of a much quieter, more personal nature which aren't easy to believe in as far as I'm concerned.

This God seems to require faith from his people, but the people of the Old Testament didn't need faith or proof. He was right there with them all the time.

So why the change of heart? Why not be a visible hands-on God again?

Some people think that God will intercede at the time of the apocalypse, but why wait for that?

"But God has his own plan and it's not for us to understand" I don't think this is really an explanation nor even a good excuse.

Would any mother or father stand idly by as their children suffered? They would rightly be arrested for neglect. Would the argument "but I've got a plan which you wont understand" really stand up in court?

Some good comments from the faithfull so far ---BUT--- still not addressed the "fact" that God was right there with the Jews in the OT - they even had the Arc that could allow them to communicate directly with him. But not now. Why?

Ivan - yes, I have read a fair bit of the Bible and even went to Bible studies as a kid. True I haven't read it recently. However, you haven't exactly argued very well from your own point. At least tell me what you think I've got wrong.

1John 5:19 :) 19 We know we originate with God, but the whole world is lying in the [power of the] wicked one.
If you read your bible then you would know that god had a disobediant angel named Satan, now called devil. This x-angel wanted to be god and said he could rule the world better than god.
So jehovah(god) is proving satan wrong as we now speak, but remember since this satan's world right now and jehovah wants to prove satan wrong,so it would be unlawful for god to but in. ......if you really are serious about any of your questions then e-mail me and i'll answer them...with bible scriptures.

When you say about quieter miracles of a more personal nature how do you know?

When was the last time you got down on your knees and spoke to God and told Him all these doubts and fears.

Job Springs to mind right now and how he was reduced to almost nothing, but he still kept would curse God. It strikes me that you may ave read some of the bible, but you haven't read all of the Bible. Why not go back and read it again, but make sure that you ask God to bring it to life for you this time?

Maybe then your opinion of God will change and you will see why there is a difference between God and man. God Faithful Love Endures Forever. Try it and see?

You raise a number of points, too many for me to answer and not enough space. So I'm going to answer this one...
God is hands on these days, He never changes His word says He is the same yesterday today and tomorrow...
We now have the Holy Spirit(the Spirit of the living God) living in us and around us, in the days of the burning bush the Spirit of God was given to certain people to fulfil a task, or The Spirit of God was upon men not dwelling within men until the book of acts tells us Jesus followers were in one place and a mighty rushing wind swept among them and tongues of fire fell on them and they began to speak in different tongues, this still happens today. Miracles still happen today, the miracle of life, the afterlife, healings, these are miracles. Signs and wonders happen today, you will see them if you keep your eyes on The Lord....God has a plan for each of us and longs to share it with us, it isn't a mystery, maybe He just wants to get your attention...try talking to Him today, He loves you with an everlasting love....

Where did you get your theology from a cracker jack box?

When did you really read the Bible last?

You neither know God nor the Bible with such lunatic assumptions?

Get real, the ridiculous assessments that you put on the Bible I don't even think you have ever opened its pages?

look, i know that right now God's ways are hard for u or any other person(including me) to understand. right now the earth is not entirely in God's hands, but more so in Satans. we would never even be in this mess if Adam and Eve would have never obeyed the devil. but because they did, God is letting the the devil take charge of the earth for a while not only to punish us, but to prove to Satan that he cannot persuade all of us to be like him and that he would only be a negative influence on earth. but if you stay close to him and frequently pray for forgiveness then he will help you. by the way, God never actually appeared physically anywhere or anyway, he was never the burning bush but he used it as a kind of telephone to communicate with Moses. very soon God will once again rule over earth as at the time when he created Adam and Eve and Satan will be banished(to i don't know where).

the miracles that don't affect you do not exist? Jesus fed thousands on a few fish and a few loaves of bread... and the next day the people asked him to show them a sign or miracle?! it doesnt matter what God does or did, people will/would still not believe, because their hearts are hardened.

God gave His greatest Gift of all to the world, and still the world rejects Him.... just because you cannot see or hear or feel God with you, doesnt mean He isnt actively doing miracles in people's lives each and every day. I've seen more than my share in the last couple years alone!

Have you ever thought of taking centre stage at speakers corner at Hyde Park in London. You would have a captive audience and those who wanted to could have their say as well. Not sufficient atmosphere on here to get the shackles up, or even incite a riot.

>>>Would any mother or father stand idly by as their children suffered? They would rightly be arrested for neglect.>>>

No, not necessarily. There are some forms of suffering that children go through, that nobody can do anything about. Not even their parents.

When God the Son became Incarnate and lived on this earth in the person of Jesus, He suffered. He also, undoubtedly, watched other people suffer and go through hardship.

Such is the human condition, unfortunately. Such is an undeniable aspect of humanity. Though He didn't have to, Jesus humbled Himself to share in it.

So, with that in mind, don't think of God as some "far out there" being who doesn't relate to, or care about, our suffering. He definitely does, because in the person of Christ, He made Himself one with it!

Nobody really knows why there's all this suffering in this world -- and I don't think we're really meant to know.

But we are meant to know that this world is not all there is. There's another one to follow, one where there is no suffering or misfortune of any kind. Something to look forward to, isn't it?

If you'll recall, Israel itself, God's chosen people, were "stubborn and stiff-necked" when it came to belief. You also have to remember that in today's world we do have revelation of God in His Word. Do you need more miracles in order to believe? It's not necessarily God's job to convince you of his existence, neither can you criticize him as you have done with your assumption that God is like a parent.
