When I hit my Irons I get a shock (like hitting a baseball with the thin part of the bat). What am I doing that is causing this? Is it because I am hitting the left part of the clubface?

No, if you're right handed, you're hitting the right part, or the toe of the club.

But if you're lefty, then yes, the left part.

Or (either handed) you're hitiing it thin, or the bottom of the clubface is making contact to get the sting.

Switch to graphite shafts and that will go away. It's the metal shaft that you're using that produces the shock when you hit the ground after hitting the ball (and hopefully taking a divot as you follow-through).

How is the ball travelling after impact? Thats how you tell if you're not hitting it in the right area.
