The smaller you cut them, the faster it will take.

But, don't boil them. They pick up too much water that way. Steam them instead, and steam them until fork tender.

I leave the peels on mine, cut them into about 1" cubes, cover with cold water, bring to a boil, and boil for about 20 minutes or until a fork or knife goes through them really easily.

Usually about 20 minutes or so, more if the potatoes are in big pieces, less if they are in very small pieces. When you think they are done, take a wooden spoon and press a piece against the side of the pot. If it smashes really easily, they are probably all ready.

Till they are soft. Presuming you have peeled and cubed them first. Maybe 30 minutes? More or less! After they are soft, add butter, salt, and garlic. Use your masher and mash in the pot.
