It depends on where you call. All the local places where I am have a live person answer the phone. I have lived in some bigger places where some pizza joints had a recording, though, but you always KNEW it was a recording. It gave you options to select, and you could always get a real person if you needed to. Generally, though, most places have someone to answer the phone.
I am not sure what you mean by "well then... ANSWER." That doesn't make any sense.

Depending on the pizza company, and how busy they are, you might get answered by an automated voice system, to let you know of their current specials. However, for placing of the orders, they have a live person come on and talk with you, and get your order.

well, let's just say recordings cannot answer questions, so yes it is someone(real-live) on the phone taking your order, unless your ordering online...

I always get a human being. I have heard though that some places have those automated things. I have no clue how they work.
