Truthfully., Ho Chie Mien made the mistake of saying he was a Communist, instead of saying he was a Socialist.

The Gulf of Tonkin incident was the alledged catalyst for the start of hostilities with the VC. It has been said, this was trumped up by the CIA to move things along and get on with the war.

How a country could be more wrong headed about a war is beyond me. Ho Chi Mien must have done something to piss off the US other than be a communist. He was an ally during WWII. All he really wanted was independence from the French after the war. He no longer would accept French colonization, and even asked the US for support on this. The US turned it's back on Ho Chi Mien, instead supported the damn French.

It wasn't just Nixon's war, because he was the last president to live with the Vietnam fiasco. It was Eisenhower, Kennedy, and Johnson's war, too!

It was all about the spread of Communism. The Domino theory would be correct except the Communists weren't "spent". at all.

In August of 1964, United States President Lyndon B. Johnson claimed that North Vietnamese forces had twice attacked American destroyers in the Gulf of Tonkin. Although there was a first attack (in response to U.S. equipped and orchestrated South Vietnam's commando raids on the coast , claims of a second attack were later proven to be unfounded. Known today as the Gulf of Tonkin Incident, this led to the open involvement of the United States in the Vietnam War, with the Gulf of Tonkin Resolution. And that got us into Vietnam, where over over 50,000 Americans were killed. Maybe we can't always trust the government to do the "right thing"

The domino theory. If Vietnam fell to the Communist, than so would Japan, Indonesia, Cambodia Formosa, the Philippines and maybe even Australia.North Vietnam could not get passed the US for many years and the Communist were spent when the war was over and could not finish their quest to rule the Far East. If yiu have a problem with this than research "Domino Theory">

Like most wars, it doesn't have A main-reason. It has many.

* The French were trying to hang onto their lost colonial empire.
* The Vietnamese wanted to be free.
* The Soviets and Chinese saw a chance to spread communism.
* The Americans decided to help the French.
* Then the CIA decided to get involved.
* A lot of corruption on all sides.
* A desire to prevent the spread of communism.
* A genuine desire to help the people of South Vietnam.
* A refusal to see how very corrupt the South Vietnamese government(s) were.
* The hubris of the Kennedy and Johnson administrations, particularly Macnamara and his 'Whiz Kids'.

That's a short list to get you started...

North Vietnam a communist nation invaded South Vietnam a Democracy which asked the U.S. and U.N. for help which was responded to by France and other major powers, after which the U.S. crushed the Northern Vietnam Military which would have died out and surrendered completely if China and the USSR had not come to their aid with weapons and money

Heroin.
Vietnam was primarily in the business of growing heroin poppies for opium and heroin export.
The Chinese wanted control of the poppy fields, the French had control of Vietnam, but France had begun to have a large heroin and opium problem incountry, due in a large part to dope from Vienam.
France decided to cut Vietnam loose, but was afraid to let China take the poppy fields, so the French prime minister asked President John Kennedy to take over Vietnam.
Kennedy agreed and took over control of Vietnam, but refused to send troops over to keep the Chinese army out. The Chinese army was crossing the border to get the opium.
Kennedy was assinated, Johnson became president, he sent in the troops, and the CIA stepped up its operations in Vietnam (mostly smuggling out as much heroin as they could get out) and the "military occupation" was begun.

The communist backed north invaded the south. The US didn't like this, of course, and was drawn into the conflict officially when we were fired upon in the Gulf of Tonkin. That's the bare-bones short version. There were a lot of political nuances that went beyond this, beginning with President Eisenhower.

To prevent the "domino theory" where it was believed that country after country would become Communist. To prevent the advancement of Communism we sided with the South Vietnamese who were under a democracy. Unfortunately we did not prepare properly for an enemy whose culture was significantly different from our own we were defeated. Much like what we see in the Middle East today.
