i just heard that they are going to merge.
the question that i have is do i have to get a new xm receiver

They are _planning_ a merger. Odds are it won't happen, for the same reason the FCC blocked the merger of DirecTV and EchoStar (Dish Network) some years back: lack of competition.
If the merger does go through (after all, miracles do happen), in order to get both XM and Sirius programming, you'll have to buy a receiver that can receive both signals. FCC had decreed that this was supposed to be the case, but had never enforced it.
