If the first solution doesn't work for you, and you have windows XP sp2, you should have movie maker v2, or at least v1. See if it will recognize your cam and allow you to import or record video from it. There also might be some helpful info or dowloads here, http://www.sonydigital-link.com/DIME/camcorders/DV/DV.asp?l=en&m=DCR-HC42E Sony might also send you "Picture Package." Don't know till you ask. If you get it, you can make sure you have the latest upgrades here, http://www.ppackage.com/e/download.html#dl

First of all, are you connecting by firewire? If not, buy a firewire cable and adapter card (if necessary), and connect by firewire. It will be your only option if you want to use Windows Movie maker or many other programs. Also, when it is plugged in, make sure your camera is in VCR (VTR) mode. If you do this, Windows should detect your camera automatically. If not, open up Movie Maker and select file-> capture video. Then follow the steps on the screen. Hope this helps!

Open up Explore (right click your start button. choose Explore). Hit My Computer. Your PC should recognize your Sony as a separate drive. Try copying the video and pasting it to a folder in your PC.
