I work a 9 to 5 job which means I am out of the house from 8am to around 6.30pm each weekday. Would it be wrong to get a cat? I would rather have an indoor cat. I would really love the company as I live alone, but I don't want to end up giving a cat an improper home.

its fine to get a cat while working these hours, but i would suggest getting 2 as they will keep each other company. if you are wanting to have an indoor cat, choose a kitten/s that are not used to being out doors. you will need toys to keep them amused while you are not there and a scratching post is a must as if they are not outside they cant keep thier claws under controal and u will find ur furniture ripped to shreads - this happened with me and the scratching post saved my wallpaper and sofa! cats are very loving animals and will show you a lot of affection, if you get 2, get one of each sex to stop competation between them as they will fight for the top spot and also get both of them spayed and neutered as soon as possible to stop kittens. i have kept both cats and dogs and i find cats are the more rewarding pet, they are great companions (sorry dog lovers, but thats only my personal oppinian). i say go for it and reep the rewards that cats can offer.

I think you are the kind of person a cat would love. Good for you thinking about it first. Indoor cats live MUCH longer lives and spend a lot less time in the vet.
Most cats SLEEP most of the day. So your absence will be minor to her. Make sure you are prepared for a pet sitter or whatever you may need if you go away for a weekend. I highly recommend the littermaid cat box. It made me life world better & my two cats love it too. I mean who would not like a clean cat box every time?
Whatever you end up doing adopt your pet & get it fixed ASAP! Good luck!

Oh, definitely. I work and 8 hour a day job as well, I leave at about 2pm and get home at 11. My boyfriend works overnights so he's sleeping during the day and not available to play with the kitties. But I'll tell you this: I got my first cat Bristol and he was a little brat. He tore up toilet paper rolls, bit us and cried and hit the cupboards back and forth to make noise. We thought he was just a bad kitty :( Until we got Dora. We figured it out then that he was just bored and lonely and wanted a playmate. They play constantly, chase each other around and sleep together. He even makes sure that she has eaten and drank her fill before he will have anything to eat or drink. He never bites us or makes messes anymore. They are the best of friends. And even when we have to be gone for a day or two we know they will watch out for each other.

As many have said, two cats is a great idea. Ours keep each other occupied while we're away and then both of them (actually all three) are right there with us watching TV, cooking, eating, etc. when we're home.

New kittens, 5 - 6 weeks old are great to start with. They'll grow to enjoy your company if you bond with them at the start.

Start off with them closed in a safe warm room while you're away at work. We used a bathroom. It's easy to clean up if there's a mess. Food and water and a box with blanket, as well as that shallow litter box will do them just fine.

The only thing I would be worried about is the cat getting bored and eventually shredding things just to have something to do. If you ever run into that problem, or want to avoid it completely, get another cat for a companion.
My boyfriend and I both worked, I was gone from 6am to 7:30pm and my boyfriend was gone all kinds of hours. I got littermates and they were fine alone for long hours. They mostly slept!
Its alright to get a cat, they are great companions and perfectly fine with being alone most the day.

This would be a reasonable environment for a cat to make its home; however, I suggest you get two so they have each other during the day. Adoption is a great way to go Petsmart usually have some for adoption. I would avoid the pet store in the mall because those kittens are normally in poor health. Be prepared to never be the boss of your life again. Our Babies run the world and require our immediate love and obedience to their desires on a constant basis. My wife and I would not trade them for the world.

Cats are alot of company, And they don't need you to be home with them all the time, I have 3 cats they play all the time, I have cat toys, a cat tree, even if I just had one I wouldn't worry about leaving it alone. They also sleep alot. Sounds like you are a very sensitive person to even ask if you should have a cat, In my opinion you will make a terrific mommy.

Two cats are better than one...they will keep each other company when you are away. But if you can't do that then try leaving the TV on and make sure you give it access to the window (which is like TV for cats). Plenty of toys and a scratching post will help keep it entertained. They even have videos for your kitty.
If you are a responsible pet owner then it is never wrong to get one for their are many dying because there is not enough homes.

Responsible owners would....
keep their pets inside for safety and protection.
spay/neuter their pets to keep them healthier and happier.
give them good quality food and treats.
have them checked at least once a year and vaccinated.
give them lots of TLC.
NEVER "get rid of them".

I am in the same situation, but only have one 7 month old kitten. she ok in the house on her own (i think!), she hasn't torn it apart, but i make sure that she has a regular supply of new toys to keep her entertained (nothing expensive - she like socks and toilet roll best). She is the best thing to come home to after a long day at work, and i have solved the holiday problem, by taking her with me or her grandparents coming to get her for the weekend!

If you are going to be out of the house a lot, get an adult cat. Older cats are more laid-back, and if you supply plenty of toys, a scratching post or two, and a kitty condo your four-legged friend will be happy. If you get two cats, make sure they get along before leaving them alone, or there will be serious trouble - spraying, fighting, etc.
