As far as a dog is concerned, the postman is an intruder. A dog will learn that if he barks and attacks the intruder will leave (probably running!) and so the dog will repeat the behaviour everytime the postman dares to intrude. Your dog is protecting you and your property from this danger.
The only way to deal with this is to thank the dog for a job well done and teach your dog that there is no need for it to attack as you will deal with the intruder.
Everytime the postman arrives and your dog goes bananas call your dog to you, praise him and say thanks, give him a treat and lead him away.
When some one knocks at the door you need to ensure that your dog knows that it is your job to deal with the intruder. Don't allow your dog to barge to the front door barking wildly. Thank your dog for the initial few barks and then put your dog in the kitchen/ in the garden while you go and deal with the problem (in the dogs eyes!). Your dog will gradually understand that it is not his responsibility to attack visitors (including the postman) and the aggression will lessen.
If you really want your dog with you when you answer the dog, make sure that he sits behind you when you open the door.
You will need to practice this and improvements will be made over time.
Just remember that the dog is just carrying out what it thinks is its job and to improve its behaviour it needs to understand that when you are there it is your job to deal with intruders. Your dog will still alert you - just not attack!

You try thinking about how many yards the postman\lady has been in, and all the different smells they have collected of other dogs. Its no wonder they hate them. Same thing with the metor man. But now with some newer houses they don't have to even get in your backyard, but some still do. You won't be able to stop it completely, because as some had said on here before, its a territorial issue which is very natural, and hightened in certian breeds more than others. You can only control it, by showing your dog that that behavior is unwanted by you. Your dog doesn't know your getting the mail, it just realizes no doorbell was rang, or there was no knocking on the door... the person just leaves after hearing the dog bark or growl aggressively, therefore it actually thinks it scared them off! Make sense?
On Fighting Breed Specific Legislation...
Every responsible dog owner needs to stand up and fight against BSL! Remember, it could be you next time! If you don't think so, take a look at the BSL that Italy passed last year against 92 breeds of dog! If you choose to walk a Corgi or Border Collie in public they have to be muzzled as they are considered dangerous. In the Bahamas they passed restrictions against many large breed dogs. It doesn't matter what breed of dog you own, you can easily with one incident become a target.
Owners who fail to control their dogs may find themselves with an empty mailbox. The Postal Service will move or stop mail delivery at an address if a letter carrier is threatened by a dog. In some instances, Postal Service employees have sued and collected damages for dog bite injuries. So please get you dogs trained right, and be a responsible pet owner. Letter carriers are trained to protect themselves by using their mail bag (as a barrier) and pepper spray (not good for your sogs eyes btw). Some carriers also carry umbrellas ("dog-brellas"), which are pretty effective because they startle dogs when deployed, but doesn't phase all dogs. Getting on a dog's good side when the owner is around is another good self-preservation move. The Postal Service recommends:
● If a letter carrier needs to deliver a certified letter or a package to you, put your dog into a separate room before opening your front door. "People come to the door and they assume their dog is very friendly.
● Remind your children that it's important to keep the family dog secured. An open door or unlocked gate, usually about the time children are getting home from school or during the summer, may likely signal a loose dog (and one that is protective of those children).
● It's also wise to not let children take mail directly from letter carriers because a dog may see handing mail to a child as a threatening gesture.
● Letter carriers also appreciate posted signs that let them know if a dog may be in a yard.
I posted a link below (where I got sme of my info.) that may help you. Good Luck! :)

If a dog is barking at the door, he's guarding the den and if the postman then goes away the dog has done its job! The dog learnes to recognise the uniform and soon learns the scent of the individual posties too! If he encounters the same person on what he sees as his territory he'll bark to frighten him away. If he's lose and the postman backs away he's won again! The only way to stop the behaviour is to teach the dog not to bark! Every time he barks at the door tell him quiet and reward with a treat as soon as he stops, He'll soon learn the command and you can then use the command for other situations.
If the postman is willing let him get to know the dog and even give it treats if the dog is behaving!

The reason why dogs dislike delivery people is because they see it as invading their property so they bark to warn them off. As the delivery person then leaves (as they would do lol!) the dog thinks that the barking has worked so they will continue to repeat the behaviour. The way to stop it is to teach your dog to ignore things coming through the letter box or the door bell ringing from an early age.

It seems to be the uniform they wear. Try taking your dog and letting the mail person pet him and maybe if they brought some treats with them for him he will get use to them and stop. This is what I did for mine and she never barked at my mailman again. She go where she would wait for him, and lick his hand they became friends after that.

Nope, mine doesn't. He gets excited when he sees the truck coming and always wants to go out to meet her at the mailbox. He likes her a lot. I'm not sure what to do about it, my Mom's old Yorkipoo's used to hate them too. I have no idea what it's about!
