Make it two ways so that the guests do not wait for their turn in getting their food in a long one line. Set different tables for the salad and dessert so some guests can help them selves while others are in the main course line. Also a different table for drinks and appetizers. So the guests are distributed around the place of reception.

At a buffet style wedding, people naturally eat in shifts. If there's a line, they will find something else to do and eat later - keep the bar stocked.
But, there are ways of making the food more accessible. Instead of just one single file line, why not have the food spread out. Finger food and appetizer stuff on one table; entree and main dishes on another. And always have the food accessible from two sides.

instead of having people tap their glass to see the bride and groom kiss have them sing a song with the word love in it, it doesnt have to be a whole song just the course would be fine. That way people will be watching them sing while others are getting food. Make sure you make it clear that tapping the glass is out and they have to sing for the kiss.
Have wine on each table and have a salad and some buns on each table so that they can have somthing to nibble on before the they get to eat and are waiting for the others to sit down. Have it so two or three tables go up first than once it gets down to only four or five people up standing have the next two or three tables go.

Not for sure how many guest you are having but one way of setting up the tables is to have a 8' round in center with 4 rectangular tables coming off each quarter of the round. The round table holds a large floral arrangement and also has your main course on it (meat). The other tables that are running off the round has your veggies and potato's and salad on them. This way you will have 8 lines going instead of 1 or 2. It moves very quickly when it is set up this way. Good Luck!!

Won't be bored waiting for what? The food? The buffet line? You can always have one or two servers with plates of "finger food" walk the buffet line if its long to provide food to the guests prior to them reaching the buffet tables. Is this what you are talking about?

The great thing about hiring a caterer who knows what they're doing, is they really do know what they're doing ... chances are your guests are going to be walking around from table to table and they aren't going to be worried about who gets the food next. The caterer should tell each table when it is their turn to get up and go to the buffet ... that way things remain calm and chaos is averted.

Have them go up to the buffet in shifts so there isn't a long wait. Have bread baskets on the table for them to nibble on. You could also have a magician work the tables while they wait if you feel they must be entertainer. :-) Or you can do a slide show of pics of you all as children with captions and then bring the pics up to date and set it to music. Good luck!

Start the music as people are getting up to get their food but start with something upbeat yet subtle like Frank Sinatra, Harry Connick Jr., Michael Buble, or Jamie Cullum. Also, if you are having an open bar people will start to head to the bar while they are waiting. I understand your concern that your guests will be bored while waiting, but I'm sure that guests will get into the music, conversations, and atmosphere while they are waiting rather than being bored.

How about a guest book from the guestbookstore.com. These are a fun way to ge everyone doing something for the wedding. You put a few pages on each table with pens/markers and people fill them out. Personally, I think this is a great activity and its neat to see what everyone writes. Check it out and see if maybe it would fit in with your day.
