According to etiquette, you can start a sentence with anything that's not a dirty word.

According to grammar and syntax, it's OK too. Just take any sentence containing a phase starting with "like" and move that phrase to the beginning of the sentence. Example: "Like a rose under the April snow, I was always certain love would grow", from the Streisand tune "Evergreen". Sappy, but correct.

it's not typically correct grammar unless you intend to start the sentence with a prepositional phrase which you will then clarify ... often done for artistic purposes or to build drama in a sentence... such as ...

Like a stealthy creature of the night, the killer stood in the shadows, waiting for his victim to come into the alley.

It is not correct grammar to say "Like, when I was at the mall the other day there were like four dozen girls there wearing the same Marilyn Manson t-shirt as me."

Just because everyone else is doing it doesn't mean any of them should.

Oh... and the word like is not synonymous with "said"

as in : and then she was like "well this is my marilyn manson t-shirt"

No! But...I still say it far too much...I don't think I actually start sentences with it...but "like" certainly is a much over used word in my vocabulary. One of my bad habits I can't seem to drop. *blush*

You can start it with any words you like for as long that there is a sense to what you say, so people could understand you.

Like no! Think before you speak.

No unless you are 13. My daughter does that.
But seriously - no - it should start with a subject.
