Your spirit actually stays with you, but with more sence. At the time of Day and Judgment, it will be too late to correct the bad things we have all done. It can only sometimes be redeamed when people are hell. And that doesnt even mean all the times. There is such thing as heaven and hell, hell is paying for all the bad things you have done, and heaven is beauty and paradise more than any language can explain. It is only for the do gooders and the people that deny everything bad they do until it is to late. People defend their religon so much {which isnt a bad thing} but have you ever noticed, that they dont even follow what they preach. Many people do this, which is why so many people have sins more than you can ever count. If you want more information on things like this, cheack out some translations of the quran. Or even the torah. You dont really need a translation for the bible beacause well, it already is in english! I hope this clarifies.

Yes, the spirit goes either to heaven or hell, God will provide a perfected body to join the spirit, that after the judgment the body and spirit goes to the lake of fire or eternity with God.

You do realize you are going to get more than one answer, right? I believe in my heart and soul that there IS a Heaven and Hell. It never made sense to me that a life can just end :-(. Plus, it's super depressing thinking that I just become non-existent when I die. Hell is depressing, too, but at least I'll be in Heaven and live forever :-)

My understanding is, the soul returns to the Ether from where it originated from. Ether is the space assumed to be the empty space surrounding an atom and it infinite throughout the universe. Note Random House Webster's College Dictionary (4. a substance formerly supposed to occupy all space, accounting for the propagation of electromagnetic radiation through space. Also, aether)

Spirit
Hebrew: ruah; Greek: pneuma, meaning wind or breath
In 2 Thess. 2:8 it means "breath," and in Eccl. 8:8 the vital principle in man.
It also denotes the rational, immortal soul by which man is distinguished (Acts 7:59; 1 Cor. 5:5; 6:20; 7:34), and the soul in its separate state (Hebrews 12:23), and hence also an apparition (Job 4:15; Luke 24:37, 39), an angel (Hebrews 1:14), and a demon (Luke 4:36; 10:20).
This word is used also metaphorically as denoting a tendency (Zech. 12:10; Luke 13:11).
In Rom. 1:4, 1 Tim. 3:16, 2 Cor. 3:17, 1 Pet. 3:18, it designates the divine nature.
Death
may be simply defined as the termination of life
It is represented under a variety of aspects in Scripture:
"The dust shall return to the earth as it was" (Eccl. 12:7).
"Thou takest away their breath, they die" (Ps. 104:29).
It is the dissolution of "our earthly house of this tabernacle" (2 Cor. 5:1); the "putting off this tabernacle" (2 Pet. 1:13, 14).
Being "unclothed" (2 Cor. 5:3, 4).
"Falling on sleep" (Ps. 76:5; Jer. 51:39; Acts 13:36; 2 Pet. 3:9.
"I go whence I shall not return" (Job 10:21); "Make me to know mine end" (Ps. 39:4); "to depart" (Phil. 1:23).
The grave is represented as "the gates of death" (Job 38:17; Ps. 9:13; 107:18). The gloomy silence of the grave is spoken of under the figure of the "shadow of death" (Jer. 2:6).
Death is the effect of sin (Hebrews 2:14), and not a "debt of nature." It is but once (9:27), universal (Gen. 3:19), necessary (Luke 2:28-30). Jesus has by his own death taken away its sting for all his followers (1 Cor. 15:55-57).
There is a spiritual death in trespasses and sins, i.e., the death of the soul under the power of sin (Rom. 8:6; Eph. 2:1, 3; Col. 2:13).
The "second death" (Rev. 2:11) is the everlasting perdition of the wicked (Rev. 21:8), and "second" in respect to natural or temporal death.
THE DEATH OF CHRIST is the procuring cause incidentally of all the blessings men enjoy on earth. But specially it is the procuring cause of the actual salvation of all his people, together with all the means that lead thereto. It does not make their salvation merely possible, but certain (Matt. 18:11; Rom. 5:10; 2 Cor. 5:21; Gal. 1:4; 3:13; Eph. 1:7; 2:16; Rom. 8:32-35).

Let's see now. We know that thought and consciousness has a lot to do with complicated chemical and electrical interactions in the brain. We also know that those complicated interactions stop happening when a person dies. So....what makes people think that thought and consciousness will continue after they die?

If you think you will go to Hell then you must believe in that. If you hope to go to Heaven, then you must believe that exists. In either case, it's a start in understanding life after death. The Bible teaches that if a person accepts Jesus the Christ as his/her Savior, the sacrifice (death on the cross) of the Son of God (Jesus), cleanses one of all sins, and that soul/spirit will be with God after death.
That is all one needs to do to be in the Light and Love of God at ones death--accept Jesus as your Savior--simply say that in your heart and mind. Tell God you love Him and the Love will engulf you immediately. You will know for certain, at that moment that there is a Heaven.
So to answer your question, yes, there is a Heaven--that is the light of God, and oneness with God after death.
As for Hell, the separation of the spirit from Gods Light and Love is truly personal spiritual Hell.
As for those who mock the truth of Gods Gift of Love, Jesus, it's their choice to enter the darkness at death, and also, to live in darkness here on Earth. Free choice is another of God's gifts to mankind. Thanks for the question.
