I have a bad sight myself. Its not really a pre-requisite to have a perfect vision. Though wearing glasses and having contacts has its disadvantages, esp. when your in the OR and operations are a bit long. But other than that its ok to wear glasses and contact. I would suggest you under LASIX surgery, its a laser procedure in correcting refractive lens. Check if you can undergo to this type of surgery.

No, you do not need to have a 20/20 vision to be a surgeon, not by law anyway. What you need to have is a defect that can be fully corrected either by lenses or glasses or surgery. That's about it. You do understand that having a deteriorating eye sight problem that may lead to very low eye sight might be a waste of time in your (an thousands of other) case. On the other hand, it is your life and as long as you are not stopped by any law, well, go ahead and do as you think. You may find in the process that being a surgeon requires hole lot more that you don't have (good and/or bad qualities included).

Lots of surgeons wear glasses. For example, here's a listing of the general surgery faculty at the University of Chicago Hospitals:

As you can see, several have glasses. In addition, I counted about five of them that actually do wear glasses, but aren't wearing them in their pictures.

My eyesight is far worse than yours and I'm going to be starting a surgical residency in about 4 months.

20/50 is not bad vision. I'm 20/100, and I think legally blind is 20/200 when you are not wearing glasses. I think you would be okay. With as many suregons as they're are and as many people with bad eyesight I'm sure tons of suregons wear glasses/contacts.

glasses are fine. actually to be a good surgeon you need to see a body part in 3-d in your mind. get your hands to make it look right in your mind. eyes are only a small part of being a good surgeon.
