One cannot take the bible completely literally. After all the Bible doesn't make a good auto repair manual.

here is my interpretation of this. Adam is said to have been made from the earth. earth being matter. Eve is said to have been made from Adam's rib. rib being a part of him but not in a literal sense.

Dirt = earth. Dirt still exist because earth still exists. Ribs = the protective cage around the heart. Ribs still exist because your heart still needs protection.

As far as I believed, the Bible was metaphorical. Saying we came from dust, I believed that it means we come from Earth. I don't know about the rib, though...
