My cholesterol is 5.4, which i know is only slightly high. I'm a 24 year old male, thin/med build, 11 stone in weight and 17% body fat. I eat quite healthy, i intake between 30-50 grams of fat each day and I rarely eat junk food. I get drunk once every week. I do 2 or 3 1 hour sessions of boxing training per week and 2 sessions of weight training. I was getting heart palpitations/fluters a few months ago so I went to my G.P. for blood tests and realised my cholesterol was 5.4. My triglisterides and levels of something in my liver were also slightly high. Before the initial blood test my diet was shocking, i was eating McDonalds or KFC every day for lunch and eating 1-2 curries each week. For the last 4 months I have improved my diet and exercise drastically and take a cholesterol lowering drink each day (Benecol) but my cholestorol has stayed exactly the same. I don't understand this. Does anyone know how I can lower it? Do you think this could cause me problems later in life?

Don't worry too much it sounds as if you've got a pretty healthy lifestyle now. It may take a while longer to get your numbers down but you've made an impressive start. I asked a question about cholesterol only a few days ago because I've just found out that my level is at 6.73! I was really shocked because I'm quite healthy. I don't think that 5.4 is that bad! My diet was better than yours and yet my numbers are higher! I'm eating a even better now and have to see my doctor again in six months. I don't think you've got anything to worry about, you've turned over a new leaf and that's great but don't get obsessive because that will cause you to get stressed and that's not good for you either! All the best for the future.

It maybe genetic and that's why its not lowering, i also have high cholestrol, tried everything soya milk, benecol low fat diet nothing changed, see if it runs in your family history. High cholestrol means your chances of stroke and heart attack are higher than someone who doesnt suffer from it. Its something you need to keep an eye on and your doctor may put you on statins to lower it.
