As a follow-up to do soldier's die for oil. I want to know why individual people have chosen to serve in the military.

I serve because I believe in the values my country stands for, I believe I can save lives in the medical corps.

So what if the military is the best opportunity? What other chance do most people have to see the world before they settle down?

We've become so wussified that even the word 'adventure' is a no no.

I served in the peacetime army in the '80's. Please dont look down on me for not being in a war, I tried my best to start one, but everybody was in a good mood!
I joined to serve my country, to experience what military life was like, for a college fund, and because as usual, my home state had no functioning economy.. Pretty much in that order. We didnt actually have any shootin' wars, but we were staring down the bad guys on the other side of the border, and we were ready for them. We all understood that going to war was a possible part of the deal.
. We should have been staring down the lefties in hollywood and other nests of this nation's enemies.
The damfool notion that soldiers enjoy war is beyond stupid. Nobody prays harder for peace than a soldier. Nobody else has more to lose.

I joined the Navy to serve my country. I wanted to be a Part of something that mattered in the world. I wanted to travel and see that world as well. A Ship's crew is a family. everyone depending on everyone else to do their job. the sense of Duty and Honor that comes with being a part of a military unit.

I know that sounds like BS to many that have never served but then again if you have never served I wouldn't expect you to understand.

I have served for over 19 years in the US Army and do it for the pure joy of it. I joined at 17 years old and have never regretted it. I have been in combat seven times, wounded three and seen friends die.
But I am sick of people saying that Americans are dying for oil. Our brave soldiers are fighting to keep this world free of terror and greed. If our former President would have done his job in 1993 and rid the world of Bin Laden and Hussein this world would not be saying what they are now. Because that love that fat, wife cheating, lesbian wife of his and they still do. He is the reason that Sept. 11 happened as well as Iraq. He had the chance in Feb. 1993 to rid this world of Bin Laden and Hussein, but didn't.

I joined the Army out of a family tradition of service. My initial intent was to serve my term of service then spend the rest of my life as a civilian. In 1983 I was sent to the island of Grenada - where I saw with my own eyes what the armed forces of our nation defend our people from.

As a result I remained in service until I retired last August.

BTW - Dr Schooo, the fact that you served with honor is what counts.

The blogbaba joined the military because he needed a job. I never had any patriotic or military oriented family history, although my father also served as well as several uncles. I joined, with both eyes open simply because I needed a paycheck.

It is unfortunate that big business elitists have basically bought the government of the United States, it is my sincere prayer we as a people again rise to the challenges facing our nation, correctly identify and defeat our enemies. The problem is history seems to repeat itself, and we don't seem to learn from it.

I joined the Marine Corps in 1956 to serve my country. I served in Vietnam for 2 years and have no regrets about it. In fact, I'd do it all over again even with the outcome, which was the result of a cowardly Congress and public.

The training will come in real handy when liberals make this place go to flush mode and local militias will have to step up and restore order while eliminating all hazards in their areas.

I served 16 years because I wanted to give back to my country for what it gave to me. Freedom!

Someone has to give the sissy la la's the rights to free speech and to complain about everything from not hugging trees to not protecting endangered dirt.

I don't serve, but my grandpa did in the Korean War. As he put it in his book, as a young man, he had two options: be a farmer in San Antonio, or join the army and see the world. He opted to see the world, and I don't think he ever regretted it.
