My wife and I went through this very mess. IT took nine months from the day we filed the paperwork to when she could come here.. I know it is scary and seems like a long time, but you will get through it. Just be patient, and keep in touch with your husband.
It is hard to make it go faster, this is your typical bureaucracy, so it moves slower than a run-over turtle. One good idea is for your husband or you to keep track of the paperwork and make sure the clowns at the INS havent lost it. This happened to us twice. Tell your husband not to bother calling that phone in Nebraska, I think it is in the middle of a cornfield with nobody anywhere nearby to answer it. I have NEVER heard of it being answered. I think by now they have an automated rude hanger upper system.
What I had to do is to go to the local INS office and make a pest of myself so they would inquire and expedite things so I would go away. It is a real pain in the neck and should not be for people who are married.
The other option is to become Hispanic and go to Mexico and become an ILLEGAL alien. It is important to be an ILLEGAL alien if you are coming from Mexico, because the LEGAL aliens dont have half the rights and privileges as the ILLEGAL ones. Just ask the border guards! (if you can find any who havent been jailed for doing their jobs)

I Know its tough and stressfull. It depends on a lot of things, includibng your country, your background, how secirity check will clear, So I cant tell you anything with what you wrote.

However there are a lot of boards designated to this problem..
e.g. www visajourney com. - A lot of real life experiences. Huge archive and statistics, Britishexpats com and so on.

ADDED: If your hubby can live in your country with you you may want to explore DCF (Direct consular filing) option. Its not available in all countries and there are limitations.
