I've found the best french toast is with bread that is a few days old ... not the soft wonder bread stuff ... with milk that is just turning sour. Any of the recipes given above will work.
Just don't have the pan too hot.

My personal creation and favorite. Use day old, thick (1") slices of French bread (Texas Toast will work)
Batter:
1 egg for each 2 slices of toast, beaten
1 tsp of sugar, maple syrup, brown sugar or honey for each slice
1 tbs vanilla extract (the real stuff. Otherwise use 4 tbs of vanilla flavoring)
2 oz milk for each slice
cinnamon and/or nutmeg to taste ( I like a lot of cinnamon!)
Optional additions:
Brandy
Orange juice
Method:
Put all bread slice in a baking dish large enough so the the slices don't overlap. Combine batter ingredients well. Pour over bread. Make sure that the bread is completely covered by at least 1/4 inch. Add more milk if necessary. Refrigerate overnight.
Place baking dish/pan in a 375 degree, pre-heated oven. Bake French toast until it is done. Top will be lightly browned and a knife blade will come out dry (but not necessarily clean like a cake batter). Cut into squares and serve with powdered sugar and/or syrup.

Well for regular french toast I mix in one egg, a small dash of milk, a dash of vanilla and some cinnamon and sugar. Then just dip the bread in, and fry it up. This works best with a nice thick toast. If you want to get more creative, I like to make a thicker slice of toast, and stuff the middle with cream cheese, then follow the same recipe. Both are good served with powdered sugar and fresh fruit.

this is my favorite recipe for french toast sticks...they are soo good!
8 slices bread (Texas Toast style is what i use)
1/4 cup melted butter
4 eggs
1/3 cup sugar
1/4 teaspoon cinnamon
2/3 cup milk
3/4 teaspoon vanilla
Preheat oven to 350 degrees Fahrenheit.
Cut each slice of bread into 3 pieces to make sticks. Texas Toast is a very thick sliced bread about 3/4" thick. You could substitute french bread if Texas toast is not available.
In a bowl, mix together melted butter, eggs, sugar, cinnamon, vanilla and milk. Beat well.
Dip sticks into egg mixture and place on a cookie sheet that has been sprayed with cooking spray.
If there is any dip left, you can drizzle it over the sticks.
Bake for 25 minutes on middle rack of oven. Turn halfway through baking time.
Allow to cool.
Flash freeze on cookie sheet, remove and place in a ziploc bag.
To reheat: place 3 sticks on a microwave-safe plate and heat on high for 1 minute until warm. Serve with syrup.

French toast is made with bread (generally pre-sliced) and eggs; some common additions are milk, water, or orange juice to thin the eggs, sugar, and spices such as allspice, nutmeg, and cinnamon. Vanilla may also be added to the egg mixture. In restaurants throughout the United States and Canada, the bread is usually thick white bread made especially for use in French toast; when made at home, regular sliced bread is often used. Although usually served as a sweetly spiced dish, some prefer a savory version, seasoned with salt and pepper instead.

start with egg bread (sold as brioche or challah). slice thick (1") & set aside. in a large bowl, mix 2-3 large eggs & 1 c milk or heavy cream. add 1 tbs vanilla extract, cinnamon & nutmeg to taste. heat a pan to medium high, add 1 tbsp butter. dip slices of egg bread into milk/egg batter. place 2 or 3 slices in heated pan (don't over crowd the pan) and brown on each side. add more butter to the pan as needed to fry as many slices as you wish. serve with a light sprinkling of powdered sugar and fresh seasonal fruit, or with maple syrup and breakfast sausage. alterntatively: make ham & cheese sandwiches with the egg bread and a little mustard, then dip and fry as above french toast for yummy croque monsieur sandwiches! also serve sprinkled with powdered sugar and with fruit preserves on the side.
