The most reliable cars are Japanese. This has been proven through consumer surveys (such as JD Power).

A good first car might be a Toyota Aygo or Yaris. The Aygo has group 1 insurance and good MPG.

Honda Jazz is another good choice. A very practical car, the back seats fold flat in to the floor to create a very large loadspace.

Nissan's Micra is also worth considering, although Nissan has an alliance with Renault. The French influence would put me off, because French cars do not have a good reliability record.

I have owned small cars made my Mitsubishi, Toyota and Suzuki, and would recommend all of these.

Honda Civic would be the most reliable car I would suggest for a first car. The BEST first car I would suggest would be a 10-15 year old Volvo. The Volvo will be extremely safe, which is very important, as most first time drivers are going to have an accident. It will be reliable, but not quite as reliable as a Civic, and a little more expensive to repair.

If you are buying a used car, please make sure you get a CarFax report, and have a mechanic do an inspection before you buy. Together they will cost under $100, which is much cheaper than buying a vehicle with major problems. Cheap insurance, if you ask me.

In terms of reliability buy a Japanese or German built car. You can easily safely go up to 10 years old. As a first car I'd recommend:
VW Polo or Golf
Toyota Corolla (not the most stylish, but v reliable)
Nissan Micra
Honda - pricey but worth it

When purchasing any car, always get it inspected by a qualified mechanic like the AA or RAC - very well worth the cost. Get a full service history for extra piece of mind, especially if the mileage is high for age.
Get breakdown cover, often offered free with your first year's insurance for extra piece of mind.

First and foremost did you want New or Used?

Secondly, It depends on what you need it for and what are your tastes in a car. Do you want it with a stick shift or automatic transmission? Front wheel drive? Rear Wheel drive? 4X4 or All Wheel Drive? Gas or Diesel? Forced Induction or Naturally aspirated? High performance? Good handling, cornering? Or Fuel Economy? Convertible? Cargo room? Hatch back, wagon, or sedan?

First off do you want Foreign/Import or Dometic?

If it's an Import you want here is the list for reliability:

Compact - Toyota Corolla
Mid Size - Honda Accord
Full Size - Toyota Avalon

If it's a Domestic you want then:

Compact - Ford Focus/ Dodge Caliber
Mid Size - Saturn Aura/ Ford Fusion
Full Size - Dodge Charger/ Ford Crown Victoria

If you want a truck or an SUV than it's a totally different story.

If fuel economy and reliability is what you want than Hands down, what you are looking for is the Toyota Prius.

Consider safety when making your choice - check out safety ratings at www.informedforlife,org. All vehicles pass minimum safety standards but many are safer than others.

Reliability ratings can be found at sites like edmunds.com, consumer reports and JD Powers. Also consider fuel economy and resale value if you plan on selling the car in a few years.

If I were buying my first car today I would consider a Honda Civic - excellent safety rating , reasonable price and Hondas have outstanding reliability and customer satisfaction.

Depends on what your looking for Cool or practical? How much do you want to spend? In the under $1000 market is probably the Ford Taurus. Usually good with out major problems until 175000 miles. If your in the under $3000 there are a lot of good cars Imports are usually the best, hondas are over priced and easy to steal(higher insurance). Fast Sleeper car. 1994 or 1995 Taurus SHO (Yamaha Powered) You should be able to get a really nice one with around 100000 miles for $1800 to $2500 with Auto trans. You go to your local on ramp with your Boyfriend in the car you hammer the gas. He'll want to drive. These cars were as fast as a Mustang GT that year.

Forget all the crap about 10-15 year old Volvos and Nissan Micras, you want a cheap to buy/insure/run car that's fun to drive and handles like a go cart, right ? Okay ........ Ford Ka !!!
35-50mpg. grp 2 ins. Buy one with a full MOT and power steering and you won't go far wrong, some later models come with PAS, Air con, Central locking, CD player, height adjustable seats, leather steering wheel, split fold rear seats etc etc.
2nd choice ...... Renault Clio.

honda civic or accord.
second choice-toyata
another option-diesel vw. Those things are bullet proof and last 500k miles when well kept.
I would highly recommend a manual transmission too. You have much more control over the car, they get 5-10mpg better, cheaper, more reliable, and less maintence.
most 4 cylinders are great, 6 and 8 cylinders are too much power and just waste gasoline

I would go for a Ford Fiesta, i have had three and they have never given me any trouble, fuel economy on the 1.25 engine is great and my last one has only had a "mass airflow sensor" and usual plugs oil etc in 4 years motoring. Plus cheapish insurance if you are young and loads of s/h or go faster bits if you want to "tart it up"

Nissan Micra - never goes wrong.
Any japanese car is usually pretty reliable.
