I've noticed that my son has been scratching his bottom a lot for the past 2 days, and I have a feeling that he may have pinworm.

How can I test for it? I know it can be cured with medicine, but obviously I don't want to give it to him unless I'm 100% sure he has pinworm.

On http://familydoctor.org/139.xml#1 that site I read something about testing.

But how can I get him to submit to that type of test? And how should I position him/get him to cooperate with me?

I have always read to try it while they are sleeping. Night is also the best time for you to be able to see the pinworms... My 3 year old got them, and that is when I saw them....Its very contageous so be carefull and wash , and clip your nails. No one else in our family got it thank goodness, but they will still want to treat the whole family. Im sure you know all of this already...Hopefully he doesnt wake easily

Here's the easy way -get some clear scotch tape (not the frosted kind, the perfectly clear one) and put a little over his anus before bed. Reason being - those little suckers are more active after dark. In the morning, you'll see evidence on the tape. If that's a struggle, wait until your child is sound asleep and go look for yourself with a flashlight. You should be able to see them with the light.

If you have to treat - EVERYONE in the house has to be treated. The infected person gets two doses of medication, everyone else gets one.

Do the test when he is really sleepy, let him fall asleep without bottoms on, then you don't have to move him alot. If you have him on the bed with his legs hanging off the side it helps. It also helps to have another adult help. It only takes a few seconds to stick on the tape, and it doesn't cause any discomfort. Call your ped. doc and tell them you need a pinworm test. They will give you the tape and tell you how to do it.

welllll gezzzz don't try , for one you are not sure what you are doing and you shouldn't practice a medical procedure if you need to coach him into letting you . That in its self sounds scary to me. Take him to a physician, its safer and more comfortable for both of you. medical advice on line and diagnosis doesn't seem to be the answer for me , esp if its for my child
