My mom's a single mom and that means that i have to take care of my 8-year-old sister most of the time. I usually dont have much time to discipline her because of my homework (im in high school), my chores, and its not like i have a patient nature either. I keep screaming and now she's started screaming back at me. She's really bratty and just doesnt respect me as an elder. I want to be her nice and fun sister but i also dont want to be trampled over by her. Please help!

Just a bit of advice here....it's not what you say, it's how you say it. Keep in mind that you catch more flies with honey than you do with vinegar! You have just found out that screaming is pointless. Quiet, controlled, even tones are far more effective in the long run. Also the KISS method is very useful (Keep It Simple Seriously). Too many No's will just get you one frustrated kid. Talk to your sister when things are quiet and you are both in a good mood. Tell her how much you want to enjoy being with her and how much you hate fighting and bossing her around. BE HONEST ALWAYS! You can't have this conversation if one of you is mad or upset so timing is very important. Compromise. Figure out a way to work together so that you can enjoy one another. To get respect you have to earn it....good luck

This is what having children is all about!!! this is also what being a big sister is all about!!!

Respect needs to be taught, and th ebest way to teac it is to lead by example. Respect needs to go both ways. What you're doing for your Mom is wonderful... being a single Mom is really hard. Soon enough you'll be old enough to move out, and then your sister will miss you like crazy!!

Holy Cow!!! It's scary how much this sounds like my situation...except I'm in middle school. My little sister is even 8 as well!

I wish I had advice for you, but if I did, I wouldn't be in this situation either.

They learn what they see so if your screaming at her she thinks its ok to scream back, try and find the time to spend one on one, and see if things changes, if not say something to your Mother.
