If you have tried medicines and other types of therapy to solve your problems (since you didn't indicate what it is) then that may be the best option for you. I personally have not experienced that type of environment, but have been through anxiety, depression, etc. You have to do what is best for you and what your doctor is recommending, provided other treatments have not been successful. Some docs just "jumped" to drastic measures right off the bat. When I was young my mom took me to an eye doctor who said that my sight was fine and not hindering my learning abilities and that I should be placed in an all-girls boarding school.....talk about going to the extreme. Now, about talking to your parents, explain to your therapist your concerns, perhaps having an appt with your parents and therapist all at once would be a good approach to this. Hope you are feeling better soon!

DON'T LISTEN TO THESE PEOPLE!
I have been in the hospital several times because I am Bipolar.
It is not bad and people do not hurt you.
You check in and they give you a room. Usually you have a roomate. It is a NORMAL hospital floor and the rooms have beds and desks and even a dresser. The only thing that is different is that there is nothing sharp and the ward (the hospital floor) is locked.
There will be all kinds of people there, but most of them are bipolar or people with bad depression. They are like you. They need help.
During the day, you will do therapy and recreational activities. Sometimes you do crafts. I learned alot from the social workers there. At night, you watch TV or movies, or play games. I learned some new card games there.
You will see your pyschiatrist and he/she will make medication adjustments.
There are visiting hours so that your friends and family can come and see you.
It's like being in the hospital for an operation, except that the floors are locked.
I always feel so much better when I come out. Don't be scared. The people will help you.

A hospital will keep you safe and get the help you need. A good idea would be to ask your parents to come with you to your Doctor. This way the Doctor could tell them and help them understand the reasons for this step. I wish you all the best and happy you will be getting the help you want. Good Luck
I have been reading some of the other answers. Pay no attention to them, a hospital is safe. I think you are smart enough to know that and also reliaze you need the help they'll provide you. Some people try to scare you, you'll be fine.

Hi, this is a big decision, but it's ALWAYS better if you go in voluntarily. Then, you have rights, you can refuse any treatment, and you can sign yourself out if you want to (in theory, and if you can prove you're well enough) Voluntary patients are also usually allowed to go out (in the grounds and eventually out for the day etc) which is better.
In hospital, they usually look at your meds, make sure that you are on something that works. This is because they can supervise you more closely and get something that works quicker, as they can change doses / medications much quicker in hospital.
Usually, thay have groups, like Occupational therapy, or Art therapy, or discussion groups, Sports groups etc, so it's really not like "real" hospital, you don't stay in bed or anything.
of course, you can have visitors, usually every day and longer on weekends (sometimes they can even take you out for a bit)
it's not fun, but it can be a really useful place if you are unwell and need the best and quickest treatment available. it's also a place where you can talk to people who know what you're going through (usually that means patients, but you might get lucky with staff)
Hope that helps

Ignore the idiots here who say it is terrible. It is not all as bad as that. Ask your psychiatrist or doctor to talk to your parents for you. Have him explain the pros and cons to doing it, and follow whatever he says. Going to the hospital is not the end-all of life. In fact, it can be very beneficial. It is not like you see in the movies or like it was 100 years ago. It is merely a place to help someone in a safe environment with people who want to and are able to help. It is scary to you because it is an unknown, but that unknown will only stay thay way if you don't go. If the best help is in the hospital, then that is where you should go.
Someone I am very close to is bi-polar, and she has had a couple of instances in her life where her bi-polar made it difficult to function under the pressure of real life. She went into the hospital a few days, and they were able to stablize her and monitor her reaction to new medication. She was safe. Nothing bad happened to her. She went in stressed and breaking down. She came out healthy and ready to resume her life. Mental illnesses are tough to deal with, but if you follow your treatment and the advice of your doctor, it does not have to ruin your life. There is nothing wrong with getting the help you need.
There IS something wrong with people getting on here and judging you when they do not even know what is wrong. I am amazed at how ignorant people are about mental illness, especially considering how prevelant they are in our society. Shame on them!
Good luck!

hi
nothing bad will happen to you in hospital, they will only give you medication against your will if your are on a certain section of the mental health act, but the doctors will discuss this with you. if you agree to go to hospital voluntarily you will be classed as an informal patient, you will have the benefits of people around to help you 24/7 and nothing will be done against your will, you will only be sectioned under the mental health act if you are deemed to be a danger to yourself or others.
although nothing bad will happen to you in hospital i do recommend that if possible you remain in the community and recieve home treatment. This is only because when you leave the hospital you will have to learn to get well in the community so why not start now? there are plenty of mental health services available to help, why not discuss them with your doctor as he or she knows all the facts of the situation.
good luck and don't worry x

They help you ! I went into hospital last year for the first time in my life , I'm 53 and they along with my wife saved my life ,all they want to do is help you. I don't know your history of illness but if you admit yourself you can come out when you want , if your sectioned they can keep you as long as they want.
All i can offer you is my thoughts and prayers and I'm not particularly religious but you've got them anyway , i hope thing's work out .

I don't think it is a good idea to go unless you are seriously suicidal or in fear of endangering someone else. I have visited people there and usually they are heavily medicated.
