They wake up and smell the coffee.

Generally in my experience they grow up and god goes just like Santa Claus and the Easter Bunny.

Not all people who stop believing in God turn into atheists, some become agnostic. Actually from my experience I say they have either been hurt by someone who is a christian or in the institution of organized religion as a whole.

I just answered this same question from someone else, so I'll just cut & paste that answer.
I didn't feel that way because of any one personal experience. It came slowly. I can't control the way I believe, it's not like belief is a switch that I just turned off voluntarily one day. I was raised a Christian, and had a very strong faith growing up. It has just, over the years, started to seem more and more ridiculous to me to think that there's some sort of "being" out there. It's like the way most people think now when they're taught about Greek Myths in school. You hear about Zeus, and Aphrodite, and Athena, and you think it's silly that people actually BELIEVED in this stuff. I just started wondering why their beliefs were silly and ours weren't. They believed in gods, we believed in a God. I just started to feel that we were stuck in a sort of primitive mind-set. The stories of the Bible seemed more and more non-sensical to me. (You can be a rapist and thief and murderer and child molester every day and go to Heaven if you accept Jesus on your last day of life, but you could spend your entire life doing good and generous things to help others, and then burn in the fires of Hell for all eternity because you don't "believe" the right thing.) That makes NO sense to me. What kind of God has those kinds of rules, and yet claims to love you? It sounds like it was made up by some crazy, schizophrenic people.

They have had enough of the rubbish the Catholic church feeds them. I was witness to a man who lost his little girl, and when he asked the priest, "why?" the priest told him it was God's Will. What a blandant accusation! The man said he would have nothing to do with a God like that and never showed his face in church again. God's will was for humans to live forever on a paradise on earth (when he created us that was the plan). The plan got side tracked for a while, but to state that everything bad that happens is God's fault is unforgivable. How can you stay a Christian under such a God? Of course everyone is turning to Atheism. They should point the finger to him who is truly responsible, don't you think?

Most of the time, I heard them say because they wanted God to do something in their life and He didn't so they came up with the conclusion that there is no God.

Because many people take the time to think rationally about god and faith and come to the only logical conclusion: that gods do not exist and that religious faith is not only a really crummy method of ascertaining the truth value in any claim or concept but also very dangerous.

Because they depend on men to tell them what God told them.

You have acess to a bible, read the words of Jesus for yourself, most of the Commandments given to us by the Living Word of God are very easy to understand, we understand them we just don't agree with them. So you will read the Words of Moses instead.

Because God never shows Himself, because most major religions have a monstorous body of lies around a tiny kernel of truth, and because science explains the universe better.

I was gonna make a pithy comment here ( some people are just smarter, luckier, better, etc...) but the truth is that people just don't all think the same.
