The easiest way to get this info is to visit the parts department of a dealership with your complete VIN. That is the alphanumeric number that is listed on your pink slip or on the dash that identifies the truck. They can tell by what the rear end is through this number. Or you can take a wire brush to the axle tube and find a number code on it that also tells what it is. Or remove the cover and find the number of teeth on the ring and pinion as it is stamped onto the ring gear which when divided gives you the ratio. Good luck.

If it is a full size 1500 it has a gm 10 bolt. If it is a 2500 it could be one of two gm 14 bolt. One is 8 lug wheel and the other is 6. As far as the gear ratio goes, they were generally 3.42, 3.73, and 4.10 : 1 ratios. You can check by jacking up one side of the truck in the rear, turn the wheel one rev and count how many times the drive shaft turns.

a lot of GM truch rear ends look about the same. Some ware in the pumpkin, or axllle shaft tubes, there ought to be sone kind of code identifing the unit.

No doubt it is under a lot of road crap.
