Been there.

A common trick is to cut off pieces of it, until it's no longer satisfying. At 3, your kid is old enough not to fall for this.

Cold turkey, quite honestly, is the way to go. He'll cry. He'll scream. But, at 3, he's old enough to do it this way.

To ease it, you might look for a "trick." For example, ask him to give it as a gift to a baby that doesn't have one. (Note: don't actually let another child use it, but let your kid think it went to help a baby) Or have him "donate" it to a stuffed animal.

Stay strong, though. There may be a few sleepless nights, but it'll be over before you know it.

My cousin told this story to her son when he was a toddler to get him off of his binky and it worked. She told him that the older he got the shorter his binky was going to get and that one day he would not have any binky left because the binky "fairy" will take it to the land of used binkys where it will live happily ever after knowing it was loved. She took all of the binky's away except one and at night she would cut a bit of it off until one day it wasn't there anymore. He wasn't happy about it but he knew it was coming as the binky was shrinking week by week.

Two of my kids used binkies. We had to do it cold turkey. I tried all the cute little things like asking to give it to me in exchange for a new toy, giving it to a new baby, etc. Never worked for me. I finally had to be bold and brave and I took the binkies and tossed them to the bottom of the garbage. yes, the kids cried for about one day and that was it. I had no problems after that. One child was 2 and the other was 3. it was easier than I thought (once the crying was done).
Good Luck!!!!

i think of it would be high quality to declare on your 3 12 months previous that she will use the binky at mattress time purely and that she would be in a position to get a megastar on a chart for no longer making use of it in the process the day - if she collects adequate stars, advantages her. i think of maximum little ones like this as they prefer putting the stickers on the charts and its a favorable element, no longer a damaging and plus she gets to apply binky at night besides. After a on a similar time as, you ought to substitute binky for a favoured toy or some thing....yet go away that for some months till she feels soft with letting her binky bypass thoroughly....

Ok... you tell tell him that there are little babies that mommies can't buy binkies for them. Then you go around the house and put all the binkies in a bag. Go outside and hang them in a tree before bedtime. Then in the morning you take him outside. The "binky faerie" will have left him a present for being such a helpful and big boy.

I would tell him that he is a big boy, and doesnt need his binky anymore...make it sound like something he should be proud of. then get him to give it to you at bedtime. its important that he gives it to you, so he feels in control of the situation. make a big stink about what a big boy he is, how proud you are, ask him how it feels to be such a big boy now! then go and dont look back, no hesitation to let him think you expect him to freak out. if he cries and comes out, you will have to keep putting him back to bed, reassuring that he is a big boy. much as you did when you trained him to go to sleep by himself anyhow. he is absolutely too big to have a binky. you are doing the right thing.

At 3 he's old enough to understand that he can't have it anymore. Give him something else for at night, like a stuffed animal. It will be hard at first, but tell him in plain, simple, short terms that he is 3 and will have to say goodbye to it. Stick to your guns! You can do it!

Cold turkey. No negotiating, be consistent, understanding and soothing when he cries for it, but don't cave. The bink at this age will start to affect his mouth and teeth.

my neighbors punched holes w/ a thumbtack in them so he sucks air right through them and they are usless. it made him MAD!!!! he stayed up crying for an extra hour (or 2!) every night for about a week, then he realized that he just wasnt allowed to have it, and he cooled down.

DEFINITELY DO NOT GIVE IT BACK AS A REWARD FOR BEHAVIOR/USING THE POTTY! theh he just thinks its OK to have it again, and its twice as hard to get him back off of it.
