Ok, i grew up in a Church.. not penacosle.. but in a small Baptist church... I also believe in the Wiccan religion, the 5 elements. Growing up in my church i descovered A LOT of people that didnt approve of there kids listening or watching to certain things. I say, do what you think is right. If you know for sure you will listen to that or watch that thing one day, you should. Yet if you are far into your beliefs and believe you shouldnt and know its a sin you should do the right thing. I dont agree with that choice because im not far into that Harry Potter critisism going on. Just because its a book, doesnt mean it puts bad influences on kids. They can also get positive feed back from it, learn lessons... I really disagree with the "keeping my kids from all evil" types of things. It doesnt end up working.. My church, they do Do it, and i do disagree with it.. yeah it is hilarious

My church does not but there are families that do have restrictions. For us Harry Potter is fine, they do not focus on any type of religious belief and they are a fantasy book. To me they do no harm. But if other families don't want their children watching or reading it, it isn't like it is the only thing out there.

For us my 8 year old is not allowed to watch Nicolodean at all. No Sponge Bob, no power rangers... nothing that is overly disrespectful in speech or violent in behavior. When he was small he was not allowed Teletubbies (how would he be encouraged to talk when they talked a baby talk?) or Barney (I hate that show!! He doesn't teach pretending he teaches things can be fun if you have a magic dinosaur, and the kids were too fake ) He is not allowed to play anything T or M in video games and not allowed to see PG or PG-13 unless I have watched them first to see why they are rated that and say ok.

I think sometimes kids are being encouraged to grow up a little fast.

One thing our church has done is reccomend good Christian based movies, but in my experience this has only happened 2 times- Facing the Giants and One Night with the King. Both of which we enjoyed and might have missed had they not been mentioned.

Have a good day.

I am Roman Catholic. I doubt my Church would dig it if i started watching xxx crap. There is nothing edifying about it, just gratuitous sex. Other than that, I am not aware of the Church prohibiting us from reading books or watching films. Sometimes the Church will publicly make statements against films, or books, or certain artworks (examples :when that guy made a Madonna out of elephant ****, Da Vinci Code book and movie) because they are actually attacks on our faith, but how would we know that if someone hadn't seen it? It is not wrong for us to know what we disagree with. This is the 21st century not the middle ages.

Catholics do not have "Prohibitions", but they do discourage certain movies like "Da Vinci Code". Also encouraged if they feel they must read/watch this material to read what the Church has as "Truth" vs the piece of fiction.

Harry Potter is viewed in the same category as "Grimes Fairy Tails" in that they are not in themselves "Bad" but if emerged into only this material, it's like an eating habit of only french fries. God wants better and a larger variety 4 us.

Lastly, if we find any of these materials challenges our faith, then we can go to "Confession" and talk to the Priest about our fears, dislikes, and challenges that this material brought on.

I agree with discouraging Christians from seeing anything that is spiritually contrary to the teachings of God. I have not seen any of the Harry Potter movies or the Divinci Code of my own choice because of how damaging and even blasphemous some of the dialog seems to be from the trailers that I've watched. The Harry Potter movies are all about witchcraft and even though it is quite unbelievable it's got thousands of parents and children fooling around with witchcraft itself! Of what I've seen and heard about witchcraft, it isn't a game or some funny little thing you play with. It involves calling out spirits (non of which you have no control over), concocting "spells", and chanting/worshiping tangible things (sun, moon, stars) which can decay and do not have everlasting power or life.

It's like this, if some one put out a movie that demonstrated all sorts of things about someone you loved dearly that you knew were not true or even damaging to their reputation in any way, would you spend $9.00 to see it? I love God so I do not.

the church I attend is not controlling. Life is all about choices. I can tell you for sure that if I had kids, they would not be reading/watching Harry Potter. It's a parent's right to control what their kids do.

No, I do as I please.
They would like to control you.
It has been their aspirations for a long time.
They want to get in your business.
What you watch, what you read, what you drink, what you eat, who you associate with. But don't forget your tithe.
$$$$.

In addition there is a church that banned the reading of the Bible. It was the Catholic church, you can reseach it on the web. They said that only they had the ability to interpert the Bible.
They dug up one of the Bible translators
in the early years when the were translating the Bible into the vulgar tonque ( english ) and burned his bones. Check it out.

Banning books or movies is just another way that so called Christians keep fear instilled in their congregations. I mean really...does this lady really think that if I say "Occulus Repair-o" that your glasses are going to be fixed? Or if I say "Bippity-boppity-boo" is a pumpkin going to turn into a carriage (Cinderella)??? Give me a break. This lady better not be reading ANY so called fairytales because they all involve magic or have a witch. She probably thinks the devil owns Disney since they use a talking mouse as a spokesperson!

Well it teaches us to not watch or read things that are overly graphic, lewd or pornographic.

Yeah, I agree with that.

My church did not suggest against seeing Harry Potter; I rather enjoyed those films actually.

Well, I have heard that some parents think Harry Potter is witchcraft...and I can understand that. I am too scared to watch that by myself,I have my daughter telling me ahead of time when I need to close my eyes..she is doing better with this kind of stuff.

My church tells a lot of important stuff, but it is up to us what we are doing with our life.
