Within the past week I have noticed a large 'ball', on the upper portion of my armpit. It is very painful and does not seem to get any smaller. I've irritated it and can grab it and pull it away - so it doesn't seem to be attatched to anything. Could this simply be a lymph node that is tacking FOREVER to shrink or could this be a cancerous mass?

* * * How long do lymph nodes take to shrink to normal size?

This could be several things, the most common being a cyst. If it is a cyst, it will need to be removed. It could be other things , so you need to see a doctor. I have seen many of these in my work history and most all were cysts. They will just keep getting bigger if you don't have them removed.

They're usually little boils which can be cleared up very effectively with antibiotics from your GP.

Do try to leave it alone otherwise it may burst and it'll leave a nasty scar (I know!). To ease the pain, I find soaking a cloth in hot water, as hot as you can bear), then placing it on the boil for a few minutes, helps. It seems to loosen the muck inside, thus making it a little more comfortable.

I had something similar removed a couple of years ago. Mine was a clogged sweat gland that got infected and just needed to be taken off. No biggie. You should go to the doctor. It's probably nothing, but either way they should check it and they will have to remove it if it needs to come off.

it could be caused by so many things. First and foremost you need to get in to see your physician and find out what it is!!! You may just need antibiotics, left untreated you could have a serious problem. Let him make the call on if it needs to be treated.
