Before you purchase this vehicle, I would suggest you taking it to a reputable mechanic. Have him put it on a lift. Have him check the transmission, have him check for major oil leaks and have him do a check on the brakes and rotors. The mechanic can do a check on the engine to ensure that everything is working properly. Now this check up will probably cost you around $100, but $100 is a lot cheaper than buying a vehicle that has tons of mechanical problems, especially if the transmission is going bad. Lots of times people when they want to unload a vehicle with transmission problems they will do things like add woodchips to the transmission fluid pan, this is a temporary fix, that if it is not discovered you can find yourself with a major bill to fix the transmission. The major things to have the mechanic to check, transmission, brake pads and drums, and of course the engine. If you do this and everything is ok and the asking price is reasonable, then yes buy it, but if you find one major thing like the transmission take it back and do not give one penny towards the purchase of this vehicle.

No becuase my dad had a 1996 Jeep YJ Wrangler and we started having problems with it in about 2003-2004 so after we repaired it for the millionth time we sold it in 2005 on eBay before it probably would've broke down again. And I'll add that my Dad treated that 96' Jeep like all of his cars, like a God, carwash 1-3 times a week, spotless interior, little or no eating inside, and he made sure the thing never got a scratch too! So there is a good risk that it will brake down soon.

I am a Jeep Fanatic! I own an 88 YJ. When people ask me if I have any kids I say "Yes, 2 girls and a Jeep".

With that being said I strongly recommend AGAINST getting the 87. It was the first year of the Wrangler/YJ and Chrysler, in their infinite wisdom, used a crappy transfer case, a crappy tranny, a crappy carb, and a crappy soft top attachment system (most still used snaps).
The transfer case was replaced in mid 88 with a decent one (NP231)
The Sh* t trany was replaced mid 90 with a good one (AX15)
The carb never improved and went fuel injection with the 91 models
And the snaps on the softop dissapeared with the 88 model.
