I will be visiting the Royal Automobile Club in London soon. I have visited the dress code section at their website, but it seems that the level of formality changes based on what event you are attending within the Club. I have a formal outfit already, but in case it's a less formal event that I will be going to, I will need to have a "smart casual attire" outfit ready. I don't really know what this means; i have looked it up on google and wikipedia but I would much prefer to hear specific advice from a real person.

I'm 5'5, 32B, pretty slender, very small waist, fair skin, lightish blue eyes, darkish brown mid-back length hair. I would LOVE to hear recommendations for "smart casual attire" outfits for me! thanks so, so, much! I'm going shopping soon and the only mall I have access to is the Pheasant Lane Mall in Nashua, NH - you can look it up if you want. it only has department stores and chain stores, and nothing really nice. so that's what i have to work with! thanks all so much!

I have also posted this in Beauty > Fashion and Accessories, but I thought I may get a better reply here. Just so you know!

i would just like to add that denim is not allowed at the RAC, even with smart casual attire. I don't know if that helps!

Khaki's or dark blue jeans with a sirt that does not show cleavage. A nice T with no writing on it or a pol will work

I would go with a knee length skirt with calf high boots & a cute jacket.
OR - you could wear nice slacks with a crisp white shirt & a matching knit vest - which seems to be all the rage right now.
Smart casual is definitely a dressier style - I probably wouldn't wear jeans.
In these sort of situations, I just go to the trendier stores in the mall, like NY & Co or something like that. They often have looks already put together on the manequins - and really good prices too.
And of course they have tons of accessories - so don't forget these.
Have fun at the Royal Auto Club!!

To me, "smart casual" for a social function outside of work means 'dressy work', as in a nice skirt (not khaki) with heels and a nice blouse. Dress it up with accessories - a scarf or wrap, or a nice necklace. Don't go too risque. Or, I've also worn tailored pants with a silk turtleneck and been fine at "smart casual" affairs. You can find most of these looks at the 'chain stores' without spending a fortune. Another way to get ideas is go to Ann Taylor's website - they list different outfits and you can get ideas there.

Good luck and have fun!

Make that shopping trip to the Pheasant Lane Mall and talk to an experienced (older) salesperson at the Ann Taylor store to get her suggestions, but also look into both Caché and SoHo to better express your personal style.

And never ever shop ALONE! Bring both a girlfriend AND a gay guy if at all possible!!!

You might try some nicely tailored pants with a smart jacket, sweater or blouse and vest. Finish the outfit with some nice accessories which could be a belt, scarf and earrings and watch. You could equally go casual with a skirt, boots, jacket and or sweater. A pair of jeans with a good looking jacket or sweater along with a good pair of boots and other nice accessories would work equally well.

Smart trousers, a blouse, a tailored jacket, court shoes/high heels/nice boots.

Or, a skirt, blouse, tailored jacket, ditto footwear.

Navy suit (as above), white blouse, black footwear never goes wrong; avoid denim, trainers, tshirts. Don't worry about wearing designer stuff; something you'd wear to a job interview to work in an office would be fine.

The Royal Automobile Club sounds like it is not a cocktail party, so dressing in a sexy outfit is not an option.

You need to dress as though you are attending a bussiness meeting, or serving jury duty.

Suit, sports jacket, etc...

It really confuses me too. I just think "Tell me what you want". I'd say no jeans or t-shirts. Dress like your going to a nice restaraunt with your parents. Not over-the-top but don't look grungy. Just a nice dress or something. I always wear trousers and a nice untucked shirt to these things. Thats the male equivalent anyway.
