High School definition in US has NOTHING to do with high school (higher education) in Europe.

If your friend from US said he's in High School that means (in most cases) he is not older than 18 unless he's been attending the 12th grade for 6 years to get his High School diploma. Now you understand why do they in US call it "High School", 'cause many of them just can't get any higher. LOL

it starts with elementary which goes from 1st grade to 5th grade, the middle is normally 6th to 8th , and high school goes from 9th to 12th grade then you are off to college

Okay , first of all it goes elem. then middle school then jr. high then high. then college. elementary is k-garden - 3rd grade, then middle school is 4th - 5th grade, then jr. high is 6th - 9th grade, then high school is 10th -12th grade then you go to college for what seems like an eternity. that's how it goes.
