That means you have the rights to make copies of all of the pictures the photographer takes ... it used to be and with some it still is that you have to go through the photographer to get extra prints made, and sometimes it would cost as much as $10 a piece for wallets ... its a good thing the copy rights come with the package.

A copyright release is a GOOD thing! You will probably get a disk with all your pictures on it. You can take that disk anywhere and get whichever pictures printed that you want, whenever you want. The pictures belong to you. You will save a lot of money printing pictures this way as opposed to going through the photographer to get prints. It's also a really good way to protect your wedding photos. You can keep the disk in a fire safe/waterproof box so that if there is ever a fire or flood (God forbid!!) your pictures will be safe. You can copy the disk too and give copies to family if you would like.

You might get the proofs but you do not have the right to have them reproduced, is usually what that means. The photos belong to him, not you.
One photographer I know has his clients sign a release form stating that he can use their photos for any promotional he chooses but nothing obscene.

Have a talk with the photographer and have him explain EXACTLY what it means to him; know EXACTLY what you will be getting and what you are permitted to do.
