I'm most likely going to go to jail for 30 days for simply drinking. MC, I'm 20. We have news reports constantly bombarding us and politicians requesting huge budget increases to alleviate jail overcrowding. It seems this problem would be solved by simply reducing the amount of jail sentences and increasing the amount of fines. Marijuana, prescription drug and underage alcohol users could all be given fines and community service which would positively affect our community and reduce the load on our wallets through jail overcrowding. Why should we spend money isolating and ruining the lives of people with vices when we can make money and leave these "criminals" outside of the untouchable caste in civilized society.

Why do so many people think jail is an appropriate solution to such minor problems as marijuana, prescription abuse and underage (18-20) alcohol consumption. It's like trying to kill a fly with a shotgun. Way too harsh, way too arbitrary and way too unjust. This is law?

No. If you do the crime you do the time.

I agree with the sentences for the offenses you listed. Thos people are hurting themsleves really and not others. Any crime that involves others should be punished by jail time. However if the minor was drinking and driving that is different. Community service would help everyone plus they could get some crappy jobs done for free. :o)

I agree with you completely. None of those you listed belong in jail. Like you said, the community service and fines would be doing something for the community, anyway.

I also don't like the fact that mentally ill people are in jail. They belong in hospitals--to get help. Most are not getting any help in jail. I'm all for building more hospitals and no more jails--after all, even drug addiction is a mental health issue, and needs help from professionals in the field.

If you have priors it is appropriate. If you do not have priors, "simply drinking" should not draw a jail sentence. But, was there more, such as mouthing off to the officer, fighting, etc.? That can aggravate the "simply drinking" scenario. Good luck. And, next time get a lawyer.

the l. a. County penitentiary is over-crowded and an on-going early launch software is in place. Murray would be out in a 12 months or 2. He might desire to have been given a heavier sentence. He replaced right into a doctor whose very own unprofessional strikes killed his affected person. It would not relatively count selection to me that the sufferer befell to be Jackson. this is not significant what Jackson needed or what Jackson himself did. this is an MD's pastime to be an MD and to adhere to the expert training and to the expert ethics he's limited via his license to stick to. What Murray did might desire to be worse than premeditated homicide. He broke a huge public have confidence and killed somebody on a similar time as doing it.

i am someone who was in jail for 10 years, first time offender. now, i wont say that some people dont deserve jail but i will say that there should be alternitives for first offenders and also programs for those who have been in jail. the law is kinda backwards, i agree but i gues they feel that its the only way to deter people from" bad behavior". i'm personally fed up with the system, its a bunch of bull?*@$

Here, in Califronia, we have more jails than we do schools, and our governator is planning on building even more.

Of course, his grandfather designed concentration camps for the Nazis, so who could expect anything different from him?

It is a sad state of affairs when 25% of a country's population is behind bars.

A country is only as free a padlocked prison door.

Overall I think we should keep criminals in jail longer than we do. For nonviolent crimes, especially first offenses, I prefer alternate sentences. I heard a shoplifter was sentenced to walk around the mail for 2 days wearing a sign stating they were caught shoplifting. Public embarrassment may work better than jail time for this type of crime. I don't like fines. someone else could pay for them. Sentencing people to DO something is better.

You have a very good point. All we need to do is to let the punishment fit the crime.Trouble is that a few of these old stewed judges do not do this when they have a choice. They actually give child molesters sentences of months or even pardons.

Yes I do think something needs to be done too. However, in comparison to Japan and other countries, we are in the garden of eden.

But until we clean up our problems overseas, I don't see the issue being addressed for a LONG time.

In the meantime, keep your bum covered. Good luck, dude.

yeah, I think we have way too many laws. & i think that is the reason why prison's are overcrowding. Every day they come up with more. Pretty soon the world will be a prison, and since everyone will be locked up, their will be no guards!
