I have been having slight discomfort in my lower back and also towards my appendix area. I can feel two lumps in my urethrea, believe they might be stones trying to pass but they have been sitting there for a week now. At times a stitch when I pass water but not regularly. Any ideas/suggestions?

Kindey stones are usually extremely painful. Typically a person gets 'loin to groin' pain in spasms or waves. This is due to stones travelling from the kidney to the bladder down the ureter. Stones in the urethra are extremely uncomfortable, giving a contiuous hot burning feeling that gets worse if they shift or if you are passing urine. Any foreign object in the urethra may make you feel that you want to empty your bladder very frequently. It would be rare to feel lumps in the urethra due to stones. If the lumps are tender, they could be infective in origin

It does not sound as though you have stones, because your pain would be much worse. It is more likely that could have a kidney infection. People can get blood in their urine with either stones or infection. The presence of stones does however make infection more likely. The fact that you have a 'stitch' passing urine suggests infection. Another 'pointer' to infection if if you need to pass urine more frequently than usual (including at night), and urine that is cloudy, dicoloured or smelly.

You need to seek medical advice. You may need assessment from a urologist. Expect to have a urine sample sent for microbiology, and tested for the presence of blood. An ultrasound scan and special xrays (intravenous pyelogram) will show if you've got stones, blockage or dilation of your kidney(s) or ureter(s). A urologist can do a urethroscopy and cystocopy with a special fibre-optic scope. (This can be done under local anaesthetic in some cases). This will show if there are stones or other abnormalities in your bladder or urethra.

Hope this helps and that you find out what is causing the problem soon!

If you had kidney stones, or slush, you'd have sever pain to the left/right of ,about, your back waist, just under the rib cage.

See your doctor.
