You can enter the Delayed Entry Program (DEP) when you are 17 and have completed your junior year in high school. You will leave for basic training shortly after graduation from high school.

At age 17, you will need parental permission. Your recruiter can tell you more.

The rules are the same for all services regarding entry into the DEP and the ages of enlistment.

I believe that most ethical recruiters would encourage you to complete high school and wait until you are 18 years of age. If you are finding academics, high school, or your home life frustrating, you might consider joining Job Corp before you move on to the military.

Job Corp is a free, government sponsored job training program that is open to men and women ages 16-24. In addition to receiving job training skills in some high-paying fields, you can earn your GED and in some locations a high school diploma or even two years of college credits.

Room, board, and medical care is all payed by the federal government. However, like the military, there are many, many rules. Students live in a dormitory setting. The staff is very supportive and allow you to progress at your own speed, however, they encourage you to take responsibility. You can earn privileges and some money. This will be a good preparatory step before you join the military. The best part is the fact that it is all free. (Military academies can cost up to $60,000.00 per year.) As a result of this training, you will be more valuable to the U.S. Marines.

This program has changed the lives of many young people. I'd encourage to you to take a tour of a local facility and talk to some students.
