I trained mine where the boudaries are. However, I also have 32 acres, so my dogs have no real desire to go any further. I have never had to use a shock collar, or any other trick. We do have fences, but the dogs can get through them (they are for horses), so I just taught mine which fences they are NOT allowed to cross. I made the lessons very clear for them. However, if you live in the city, this wouldn't work for most dogs, since a canine naturally has a much larger territory than a city lot. In that case, I would suggest either a fence or an underground fence if that works for your dog.

Give her plenty of love and intelligent toys to occupier her mind.
A good fence is good to. How ever my dog use find gaps under the fence to seek under and then raced up to greet me.
Unless your dog is very obedience I wouldn't try walking with out a leach. One dog never need a leach. She stay with us.
My terrier dog had too much energy to think of letting him out side the gate with out a leach.

You have to have a solid recall ON leash before you can expect one OFF leash. So, if you have not put in the hours to teach your dog to come on leash reliably, you'll need to do that first. Enroll in an obedience class which will help you learn what to expect.
Keep in mind that some breeds of dog can never be trusted off leash like sight hounds and scent hounds who can be attracted to something and run after it and often can't be stopped.

Easy answer. This is what a fence is for. Do not let your dog run loose with out being fenced in. You are asking for trouble!

Teach her to come when called, first on a leash then try it off. My dog is a furry hemorrhoid, so I have no problem with him going outside without a leash.

Although my dog always stays by my feet outside and inside, I would never take him off of the leash without a fence. there is always the chance that just one time he will take off after a squirrel or something.

Ugh, dont use a shock collar!!!
Train your dog to come back to you with a certain word or maybe a whistle. Whistles are normally better because they attract the dogs attention. Walk in to a different room than your dog is in, whistle and call his name, praise him when he comes. The practice should work outside as well.
use an extendabe leash to start with, just to make sure he comes back when hes called. Remember to praise him when he does, give him a small treat each time and he will want to keep coming back!

Use a long tether. I have a Beagle and she used to jump the chain-link fence in the yard, so I had to resort to this method. If a dog is gonna run, it's gonna run and it's in their nature.
