Longleat Safari Park is in Somerset near Frome, thats a fantastic place to visit for a day, there is also a really nice horse riding school nearby where you can ride in the woods behind Longleat.
Bristol is very close and also good for kids, a very good zoo, an ice rink and a good museum Explore-At-Bristol.
Stourhead national trust house is also a good place for kids in the summer, large gardens, woods to explore.
The Motor museum near Sparkford is also good. Bowood in Wiltshire isn't too far and has a great adventure playground

Weston Super Mare, Cheddar Gorge, Wells, Clarks Village (Street), Brean (leisure parks there - near Burnham on Sea), Wookey Hole erm erm - that's about it. Plus you are only a stones throw from Devon (my part of the world) so you could have a nosey over the border!
