A poor, second best. For one thing, anyone who has spent 5-10 years to get professional training can't afford to give it away. Therapists make their living using the skills developed over a great deal of time, a lot of schooling and supervision. There's no substitute for that. Plus, online communication is very limited. A lot of communication is through body language and things that are intuited by a good therapist. If you doubt that, compare the impression you get from someone online, say on match.com, and meeting the real person - seldom does the image and the reality match.
There are ways to get therapy for a low cost or no cost. Call your county mental health - that's free. A lot of therapists will also offer a sliding scale for people with little money - go ahead and ask for that if you need.
Finally, don't sell yourself short if you need help. You're worth investing in yourself.

Hello,

Yes, it would be a terrific idea. It just so happens that I'm a psychiatrist with special training in child and adolescent and geriatric psychiatry. I have over 20 years of clinical practice and would be happy to be of help to anyone who wants to contact me. I'm on this question & answer site, so drop me a line. I WILL NOT prescribe any medications over the Internet, so please don't ask.

If you ever find a good one online for free, please let me know. I wish I could find a good youth counselor or a good site that would help encourage and support teens.
