Whatever you do, do it now, before the cat gets any older and set in his ways. If you lock a cat out of your bedroom, and that cat is used to being allowed in the bedroom, he may do things like dig up the carpet under the door, or throw himself against the door while you are trying to sleep.
And what you wrote is really funny. I'm still laughing. You took the cat to his bed?? And that's supposed to discourage home from coming in your bed??

Yup, I had this problem too. It was easily solved by making sure the cat spends time in the house during the day while the bedroom door was shut. This encourages the cat to find another regular favourite spot elsewhere in the house. Once you see where the cat has chosen for a bed, start to use the catnip on it to keep up its interest in it. A few days of that and the cat won't really be that bothered if when one night it comes to the bedroom, it see's the door shut. Eventually, you won't have to shut the door, your cat will already be sleeping away in its favourite bed dreaming of chasing mice!
Good luck

I have dealt with this first hand. My workaround was buying a small cat bed ($10 at walmart). I placed it on the floor by the bed to start when I brought it home. I started by putting some catnip and my cat's favorite toy in the bed. He quickly loved the bed and slept in it immediately. I gradually moved it farther away from the bed and eventually just outside the door. Now he rarely comes onto the bed at all, I usually have to wake him! You can also deter the cat from going on the bed by lightly clipping its nails when it does the wrong thing (you must use cat clippers from a pet store). Cats HATE getting thier nails clipped, that also works well...

It has to be in the cat's character not to want to be with you at night. I would guess at 8 months, it's not going to happen. I tried the "lock the cat out at night" but she paws at the door...lol. I know that there is this bed that you buy that the cat's like to be on and either put in on the bed a couple time and see if he/she takes to it and then put it on the floor, it might work. Another suggestion is to make it a bit uncomfortable for him/her on the bed by moving around a lot then she might not want to be with you but you have to understand that if the love is there for this cat, he/she will want to always be with you. I allow my cats with me in bed (I wash my blankets and sheets constantly) but they are welcome. Those are my babies. My one cat has to have her paw on me when she sleeps by me or somehow touching my leg or whatever, the other one gives me 10 minutes and goes to her bed on the floor. It all depends on the cat's personality.....Good luck.

I kinda agree with Sophie on this one, cats will be cats and have a free will all of their own. they can be very hard to train. Water is a good deterent as they seem to hate getting wet, you need to make your bed a horrible place to be that way it should stay away for fear of getting wet, then you can leave the door open and not have to lock it out of the room.

Why not try putting the cat on your side of the bed and not your partners?

cats are cats and they do what they like, so i think the only way to stop the cat getting on the bed is to shut the door.
but if you really want to have the door open maybe train it to get down by usiong a water spray and saying down and spray every time it gets up, and keep doing this until it gets off the bed.
