My dogs live inside and sleep when we are at work.

They get walked several times a day and sometimes played with outside and inside (depending on mood of them and us).
After the evening walk and feeding, they go back to sleep and we do our tasks.

(FYI:They get expensive food, have their own beds, sleep in our bed, have tons of toys and treats.)

But I wonder if they are sad because they need more from us?

It sounds like they have a great life...for dogs. If they are not content with their living arrangments (attention levels) they will let you know. Dogs tend to act out their frustrations, like pee on the carpet or chew your favorite shoes.

I don't believe your dogs are sad their just use to the routine that they have.

I have two dogs they live inside and usually that's where they want to be. We have a big back yard w/a privacy fence, so sometimes we let them out until we come home from work or we'll let them out when we get home from work.

Either way your dogs are find and have no complaints what so ever. If you have a yard let them run around and play with each other if only for an hour or to they will love it.

No, they're not sad. Dogs don't have emotions like that. Contrary to the new age vets, dogs don't really get depressed like we do. They sleep when you're gone simply because that's what dogs do when the leader is away for a short while.

I will tell you that expensive food, tons of toys and treats does not take the place of an owner who exercises them and disciplines them.

I often wonder the same about my own cats. It sounds as though you are providing your dogs with a very good environment and I would think if they were actually sad, there would be some behavioral issues that would be tough to address. I do my best to think of my pets quality of life (indoors only) and try to keep them stimulated and have lots of play time and toys to keep them occupied. It seems that you are a great dog parent and I commend you for thinking of your pets and how they might feel!

You sound like a great parents for your dogs. I am a dog owner for many years and you can get to know your dog by there actions if they are sad or happy.
Just some advice, buy the best food for your dog not the most expensive, my vet recommanded me a few different types of food, and i choosed Benefil it has everything you need for your dogs good health. $17.00 for a big bag is a good deal.
anyways, Dogs are like humans, all they want is love, as long as you give love to your dogs they are happy :o)

They are dogs, they sleep when you are gone because what else are they going to do. Now see you are giving human characteristics to them that they cannot possess. So no as long as you treat them nice, take them for walks play with them, love them, and feed them. They will be faithful companions.

Sounds like you are doing what you can other than quitting work, then no one will be happy.

If they aren't acting sad, I wouldn't worry about it. Sound like they are sleeping beacuse you are successfully wearing them out. Good job!

Sounds to me like they are content. Happy, full-belly, tired from all the play and walks.
