Autism is a spectrum of disorders, and some people who have it have remarkable skills like doing huge math equations in their heads like the autistic savant in the movie "Rainman." Some may not speak until later, and others may be retarded. But it varies from person to person.

Autism is a broad range of disorders in kids and personally it is a dumping ground just like all kids who could not achieve belong in special ed or how about any kids that show some energy are hyperactive.
Layman terms: A parent or guardian should observe child for delays in several areas: cognitive-can child learn? Is there an attention problem with other kids bugging him or talking very late or no interest in songs, coloring, etc? abc's, nursery rhymes, repeating words. Social-Not in your face for attention? Likes to be by himself all the time? Emotional-we all know what temper tantrums are about but autistic kids usually cannot express themselves in speech so more frustration...

No one understands autism. They have alot of theories but no answers. If you really want to learn about this topic type it into your search engine and search. This is a very complicated and versatile disorder.
