My dog ran away last weekend and made a visit to the shelter. Since she's been home, she's come down with a case of kennel cough. Is there anything I can do? Should I take her to the vet?

I just talked to the vet and she said it actually DOES go away on its own most of the time and that I can actually give her robitussin to keep her from suffering but if that it doesn't get better in a week to bring her in.

My shih tzu came down with kennel cough about 3 weeks ago.We took him to the vet as soon as we saw he was sick. Our vet put him on 3 different meds. One was an antibiotic. He recovered very quickly as most of the time the coughing lasts for 10 days to 2 weeks and is highly contagious. In rare cases it can get alot worse and be life threatening.Take it to the vet.Better to be safe than sorry and the meds really weren't that expensive.Of course our dog is only about 20 lbs.The larger your dog is the more expensive it may be.However if you really care about your dog and I'm sure you do ,Its worth every dime. Also I don't know if yours stays in the house but if you have any more dogs they may get it also.Make sure you wash everything you can that your dog has laid on and any toys your dog has played with.Anything you can't put in the washing machine spray with something like lysol.I hope this helps and I hope your dog makes a full recovery.

You can take her in some vets do prescribe antibiotics for Kennel Cough though it is generally viral. You might want to have her checked out in case it is more than Kennel Cough. Also treat her as if she has the flue, keep her warm etc.

I would say you do need to take her to the vet. Sometimes kennel cough can turn into more than just a cough. I went through this a couple of years ago.

The worst the cough gets the more costly it is.

Regardless if the vet says it will go away on its own, I'd still take her in to see a vet. My dog got this when he was a puppy. I ended up having to take him to emergency because it did not go away and he ended up with a high fever and would not eat or drink. I love my dogs as if they were my children and I would never wait more than a couple days to see if they felt better. If it has been more than a couple of days, I'd take her to the vet. Better safe than sorry, and better to catch it now when it is not that bad than wait to see if it progresses. Vets are expensive, but the cost of taking care of your "baby" is priceless.

OF COURSE GO TO THE VET - NOW! Kennel cough is nothing to mess around with and it WON'T go away by itself. Who diagnosed this anyway? Did a vet? Go see a real doctor who can give the dog the medicine he needs.

Take her to the vet. Often dogs need to be put on anitbiotics to get rid of kennel cough. They can also give her something to help calm the coughing down. It's easier to treat it early than later.

I agree with your vet. Kennel cough is like a cold, you can't make it go away, all you can do is treat the symptoms if they get too bad. It just has to run its course.

you need to take her to the vet asap. this is a pretty serious although not usally a life threating illness but it is highly contaigous to other dogs. also since she has been in the house you will need to steralize everything she has come in contact with since it is airborn your vet should be able to help with some ideas on how to do that.
