We got a coonhound from a rescue last week, and were just now examining her teeth. They look completely different from our other dogs. On the coonhounds teeth you are able to see black spots, like she has worn them down and you are able to see the pulp in the middle. All of her front teeth look this way, as well as her 2 big insisors on the side. What could this be from? Is this normal? Do you know a website with pictures of teeth to help us with determining her age? Thanks.

She is not showing any signs of pain and eats well - a little too well. We finally got a good look at her frontones - they are worn down to the gum! There's no tooth left! We were told she's 2 years old.

It depends but some dogs can cause damage to their teeth by biting things like fences, chains, etc and cause permanent damage to the teeth. If the inside of the tooth is exposed it's very painful and the tooth will not last very long as decay will set in. I'd have the dog looked at by a vet as it may be more humane to pull some of the teeth.

I would call the shelter and ask them for more information. It is most likely that she has seen a vet while in the shelters care, and that vet could tell you what you need to do. Rather than spend money on another consultation. I wish you luck and please keep her, even if she needs work. If you simply cant afford to pay the vet bill for her teeth, contact the local humane society. They may be able to help pay some of the bill. But please only do this if you absolutely cant afford it, because there are so many animals out there that need help.

sounds like the dog you adopted has dental problems, see a vet asap. I can't see that being comfortable for the dog.

it's probably from chewing waaay too many bones...like if she was fed with bones, only.

You wont be able to determine her age based on her teeth---have a good vet check her out.
