Here's the official blood donor guidelines from the American Red Cross:

Tattoo
Wait 12 months after a tattoo if the tattoo was applied in a state that does not regulate tattoo facilities. This requirement is related to concerns about hepatitis. Learn more about hepatitis and blood donation.

Acceptable if the tattoo was applied by a state-regulated entity using sterile technique. Only a few states currently regulate tattoo facilities, so most donors with tattoos must wait 12 months after tattoo application before donating blood. You should discuss your particular situation with the health historian at the time of donation.

In the UK you can give blood six months after having a tattoo (or a piercing or acupuncture), although if it's only been 6 - 12 months since you had it done they take an additional vial of blood for further safety testing. From 12 months they do only the usual safety tests.

We have answered this question several times. Only a couple have it right. In regulated states lik Oregon, there is no waiting period to donate blood. In states that are not regulated, there is a one year waiting period from the time you have been tattooed. Check with your local Red Cross or LifeSource.

Check the Red Cross website to see the laws in your area. Usually it's a 6-12 month wait.

you have to wait 12 months after getting a tattoo if it was in a state that doesn't regulate tattoo facilities. But I'm not sure what the rules are in states that do regulate them
