We had a 3-in-1 carseat, it was the Alpha Omega, but that is the exact same carseat as the Eddie Bauer 3-in-1, just a different cover and brand name. :o)

I found that I got a MUCH better installation by removing the base. You can do this by turning the seat over and using a screwdriver to pry the metal bar out of the bottom of the base.

It would help to know more information, like if this seat is rear-facing or forward-facing, for what age/size child and what vehicle (year, make and model) the seat is in.

Without knowing that info, the best advice I can give has already been given: see a certified Child Passenger Safety Technician. You can locate one here: http://www.nhtsa.dot.gov/cps/contacts/index.cfm

The Eddie Bauer seat sucks--the straps get all twisted and the crotch clip is awkward and doesn't seem that safe. You have to clip them together and then push them in the hole. If the buckle gives, then your kid is completely free in an accident as opposed to having one side break, but the other hold the baby. I LOVE the Marathon--the boulevard is outgrown too quickly. Go buy the seat and test it in your car. If it doesn't work, put it back in the box and exchange it for something else. You can't do any better than a Britax seat. The straps are basically impossible to twist, which is safer for your baby. It might be big for the Mustang. However, if your baby is over 20 lbs and 1 year old, it can be forward facing. Make sure you use the LATCH. Note: I said it CAN be forward facing at 1 year, not it HAS to be forward facing at 1 yr. If you put a 3 1/2 yr old in a rear facing carseat at 35 lbs, I can only imagine how squished and uncomfortable that must have been for her legs on long trips. The reason why they suggest 20 lbs and 1 yr is because of head and neck control. They are safer rear facing for as long as they can comfortably fit and for as long as the seat will allow. That said, just because the seat says it'll hold a kid rear facing at 35 lbs doesn't mean it should. The instructions on booster seats says 30 lbs and 37 inches, but I'd never put a 30 lb child in a booster. In some states it's illegal to have them in a booster before 40 lbs, but the car seat manufacturer doesn't take that into consideration--they're just trying to push out a product.

The seat should not more more than 1 inch from side to side at the belt path. There is a chance that that particular seat does not fit properly in their vehicle. Not every seat fits every vehicle. They should find a car seat tech to check their seat installation (http://www.seatcheck.org/) or return the seat and try another one.

I put the sponge type shelf liner on the seat before placing the child's car seat on it. It provides some slip resistant to it as well as protects the original seat of the car.

A carseat should not move more than inch side to side at the belt path. My best advice is to have them see a carseat tech to teach them how to install and use their seat correctly. http://www.seatcheck.org They can also get more info (or you can, what a great grandma!) at http://www.car-seat.org

I got a 96 Ford Eddie Bauer and looked at it trying to figure out what you meant. I presume you got another seat or something.

If a seat is loose they obviously you need to put a washer, to tighten it up. Simple as that. Use a lock washer if you can, to prevent bolt from loosening.
