Pale blue and/or pale green with putty colour look fabulous with chocolate brown. It's all the rage in the decorating magazines.
You could paint the room putty and accessorize with pale blue curtains/pillows etc or vise versa.

I'd paint the room a beige/cream colour, keep it neutral, then you could go for creams and browns on accesories. But you could also then add splashes of deep red, or oranges in other accessories if you wanted more colour. Either that or splashes of turquoise blue (there's tons of accesories of brown and this blue in stores near me at the moment).
But if you keep the walls neutral it means you can add the colour in the accesories and then change the colour whenever you want without having to re-paint or wallpaper.

The use of color is also something very personal.Colors can be divided into three main groups: those that stimulate and uplift, those that relax and calm, and those that provide harmony or balance. White and neutral tones are a great way of combining different decorative styles as they act as a neutral transition zone between one style and the other.

A butter color is my favorite and in my home. It can go from a traditional look to a contemporary look depending on how you accent the room.

Yes, dark red! That would look great, or a dark orange, rusty color.
