Cortisone is a is a steroid hormone.. used as a drug to treat a variety of ailments. It can be administered intravenously or cutaneously. (vein/skin)
Cortisone was first discovered by the American chemist Edward Calvin Kendall. He won the 1950 Nobel Prize for Physiology or Medicine.
It's used to treat endocrine disorders, trheumatic disorders, collagen diseases, dermatologic diseases, allergic states, ophthalmic diseases, respiratory diseases, hematologic disorders, neoplastic diseases, edematous diseases, gastroinstestinal diseases, etc. Cortisone also helped to make organ transplants a reality due to its ability to minimize the defense reaction of the body towards foreign proteins present in the implanted organ and thus damage the functionality of the implanted organ.
You know it most from anti-itch creams sometimes containing aloe as well... For use on exzema, rashes, dermatitis, etc..

Cortisone is a form of hydrocortisone and it is a steroid. Generally steroids are used in inflammatory and allergic conditions for example asthma and arthritis.
It can come in the form of tablets (usually is respiratory conditions) and injections via intravenous injections for acute conditions or as an injection delivered directly into an inflamed and swollen, painful joint - like tennis elbow or arthritic joints.
I hope this helps you....
