Pinky, I was so curious as to what other simple but "thought-provoking" questions you were posting, that it led me here. To answer this one, the first thing that comes to my mind is when I worked in a group home for mentally-challenged adults. Our supervisor instructed us caregivers that if one of the residents should act up, in other words, become belligerent or otherwise engage in inappropriate behavior, we were to "redirect and avoid all eye contact". This tried-and-true behavior modification technique was, indeed, the best way to curb the unwanted behavior. But I found it sooo hard not to look the person in the eyes, to shun them, to shield my eyes from theirs! I really feel that it is human nature to look into ones eyes as you address them--to "figuratively" make contact with them. It would sadden me if that were somehow a permanent rule of our conduct--as it was or is in some pockets of society. That's why I was probably more happy than the group-home resident was when I could finally resume looking at them. It was a torturous 5 to 10 minutes!

Well, maybe it's because I'm a war veteran, but it makes me think of fighting...the guy who looked you in the eye was the guy who was going to try and hurt you!
