"The Spirit of the Lord spoke by me,
And His word was on my tongue.
The Old Testament says thing like this over and over. "The Word of the Lord...", "The Lord spoke to me saying...".
Jesus affirmed the Old Testament repeatedly with sayings like,

'The stone which the builders rejected,
This became the chief corner stone;
This came about from the Lord,

19 So we have the prophetic word made more sure, to which you do well to pay attention as to a lamp shining in a dark place, until the day dawns and the morning star arises in your hearts.
20 But know this first of all, that no prophecy of Scripture is a matter of one's own interpretation,
21 for no prophecy was ever made by an act of human will, but men moved by the Holy Spirit spoke from God.

There are about as many answers to this question as their are individual Christians in this world. Each Christian seems to have a differing opinion on the matter even though their respective traditions probably have 'answers' to this question.
I am a Mennonite and my tradition has often stated that the bible is a written witness to the revelation of God; an inspired canon of writings that have authority for faith and life in our community of faith.
