I would actually suggest bamboo hardwood flooring.
It comes in many attractive colors (and a few not so attractive colors lol)
You can install it VERY easily with the snap in systems
It is a sustainable material, so you don't have to feel bad
There is no grouting to keep clean or replace every few years

white tiles through out the house? how boring. You like cold feet? the floors will be cold in your bare feet. You should slap whoever's idea this is until they wake up and smell the coffee. Tiles suck, they are a bear to keep looking good, especially the grout. use wood, linoleum, carpet tiles, plastic flooring just about any thing else. A novice trying to do such a job they will probably look like hell anyway. Tiles have a purpose, the reasons they are kitchens and bathrooms are so the floor does not get ruined by spilled or splashed water. Leave them in those areas. forget them any where else. you could maybe use the linoleum tiles, but not ceramic ones.

If I was you I'd get wood flooring. It's easier to clean then carpet and dirt doesn't get stuck in the grouts like tile. It is also very easy to install my dad did it himself and wood flooring goes great with any wall color and I think tile is just meant for kitchens and bathrooms. I hope my answer helps you out.

You can get tiles in almost every color, so it won't be too hard to find something that matches.
Don't buy the tiles at Lowes or Home Depot!!! That's poor quality.
Go to a good tile dealer. He also can give your Dad some recommendations how to put it in.
If he decides to do it by himself, 12 x 12" is good to work with.
He also should use the ready glue from a bucket not the powder to put them in.

do not put tiles in the living room. it is a pain in the a to install and when you mop the florr the grout gets dirty so quickly. i would suggest you get wood flooring from lumber liquidators. they have the best deals you could ever find on wood flooring. the prices go from .99 on up. tiles aren't very warm for a living room setting. you would have to invest in a large area rug. and wood flooring increases the resale value of the house by so much. plus tile is cold to walk on and wood flooring is always nice underfoot. your dad could install wood flooring.

tile can be put anywhere in the house. there are varieties of it. i would say go with a light color, since it will make the furniture stand out. porcelain tile would look nice, also tavertine. if ur dad is going to install, vynil tile is the easiest. if he does have experince cutting actual tile then go for the tavertine or porcelain. if not then vynil is easy to install. but go for a light color. off whites tones

im with ighigo laminated is cheaper and much easier for the diy guy to install.ceramic tile is very labor intensive and you need special tools to put it in ie.. a wet saw with laminate you need a saw a hammer a block of wood and something to space your edges with about a quater inch .if you use it dont jamm against the wall anywhere or it will buckle up.and for a professinal look under cut door facings dont cut around them
